The present article addresses media pluralism from a critical perspective, as a guarantor of attention to social and cultural diversity. The study focuses on deaf individuals, and an analysis is conducted of subtitles as one of the services that guarantees universal access to the contents offered by Spanish Radio and Television (Radiotelevisión Española, RTVE) for social and cultural diversity. Likewise, given the changes in audiovisual consumption in the form of streaming, and the rise of on-demand content, an analysis is not only performed of linear television, but also of live online and on-demand content. For this, a quantitative analysis was performed of a random sample of more than 5000 RTVE programs (2017-2018), to establish the number of subtitled programs for deaf individuals, their schedule, and the types of contents that included this service. Also, a qualitative analysis was performed on a sample of 72 programs distributed among the different channels belonging to this public corporation. Lastly, to evaluate the quality and suitability of the subtitles, an online survey was provided, which was completed by 183 deaf individuals who were users of the RTVE subtitles. Through this combination of methods, we were able to analyze and evaluate the cultural pluralism of RTVE through the subtitles provided for the deaf, associating it with the defense of the fundamental right of freedom of expression and social inclusion, values that must be guaranteed in democratic societies.

We present the integration of speech input into COPECO, an online teaching and learning platform developed to collect learner translation/postediting corpora [22]. Speech offers potential to increase translators' productivity and wellbeing by reducing typing time and effort. A multimodal, speechenabled COPECO will complement other researchers' and developers' efforts to integrate speech dictation and post-editing into translation tools, training and practice (e.g. MateCat allows post-editors to activate a speech-to-text component or TradDICT Learn[28], an online-learning platform to develop sighttranslation and dictation skills). COPECO helps trainers to compare different translation modalities, prepare courses and share teaching resources. To our knowledge, this is the first online platform to allow comparison between written and spoken post-editing and gathering data/statistics on speech-based postediting behaviour (e.g respeaking whole segments vs. correcting minor errors, etc). This helps translation trainers understand frequent errors made by learners when using speech which can then be used to improve their course content. It will also help to build a "speech post-editing corpus" which will be beneficial in the long run for research and analytical purposes. Unlike proprietary speech recognition add-ons with defined services, we develop speech commands for post-editing based on translators' behaviour and needs, optimising COPECO based on requirements with minimal costs.

In an increasingly globalized world, technological advancements and artificial intelligence (AI) have catalysed the proliferation of audiovisual productions and their translation, leading to new dynamics in the professional landscape. Tools and practices such as machine translation (MT) and post-editing (PE) are becoming widespread, augmenting and diversifying translators’ tasks and creating new professional profiles and educational needs. While some specialized fields with more restrictive languages and terminology have readily incorporated MT, recent developments in neural MT (NMT) engines have led to their use in more creative areas such as literary or audiovisual translation (AVT). However, this trend raises concerns about the quality of both the raw and the final output, user perceptions, ethics and working conditions. Academic studies which explore the convergence of MT and AVT therefore become crucial to understanding the implications of this technology for all stakeholders: professionals, students and instructors, researchers, audiences and society at large. This article delves into the impact of neural MT and other AI-based tools on AVT workflows, both professionally and academically, and stresses the need for further research in this area. It then proceeds to outline the main research directions in this field as evidenced by the contributions included in this special issue, particularly those regarding the incorporation of MT into different AVT modes.
