Lateritic Plateaus in the Northern Western Ghats, India; a Review of Bauxite Mining Restoration Practices

Abstract: The northern Western Ghats are characterised by plateaus and hilltop carapaces formed from ferricretes rich in aluminium ore. Ferricretes in Western Ghats are home to a high number of endemic species, many with extremely limited distribution. The heterogeneity of microhabitats on ferricretes supports a great diversity of plant and animal communities. With little overburden and a high percentage of recoverable metals they are targeted for mining which leads to removal of all soil, vegetation and microhabitats. … Show more

“…Apart from lining the paddy, large rocks are also used extensively to construct compound walls and mark land borders among other activities (Mirza & Sanap, 2012; Thorpe & Watve, 2015). All of these activities reduce the availability of large rocks on neighbouring plateaus.…”

“…Hot and dry conditions during the dry season and water-logging during the monsoon expose animals inhabiting the rocky plateaus to extreme environments (Watve, 2008). The loose rocks on the lateritic plateaus provide refuge to a diverse array of invertebrate and vertebrate fauna (Thorpe & Watve, 2015).…”

“…Unfortunately, the network of protected areas in the northern WG is not as extensive as in the southern WG, though they consist of areas identified to be of high conservation value (Das et al., 2006; Watve, 2013). The protected areas in the northern WG are small in size and consist of fragmented forests with high anthropogenic disturbance located in the vicinity of urban centers (Gadgil, 2011; Thorpe & Watve, 2015). Apart from centipedes, there have been records of other range‐restricted species on these plateaus across different taxa (snails: Aravind et al., 2005; plants: Lekhak & Yadav, 2012; Shigwan et al., 2020; amphibians: Katwate et al., 2013).…”

“…Thus, the fauna on the plateaus are exposed to hot and dry summers and water-logged monsoons (Watve, 2013). The microhabitats on these rock outcrops, such as loose rocks, pools, streams, and flush vegetation, provide refuge to multiple fauna (Jithin et al, 2023; Thorpe and Watve, 2015).…”
