Lateral root initiation and formation within the parental root meristem of Cucurbita pepo: is auxin a key player?

Abstract: Literature data, as well as results obtained in this study, suggest that the formation of a local ARM before the first anticlinal formative divisions is the common mechanism underlying LRI in flowering plants. We propose that the mechanisms of the regulation of root branching are independent of the position of the LRI site relative to the parental root tip.

“…Other non-legume species are capable of activating cortical cell divisions, for example during lateral root development, but these do not proceed to form nodule primordia (McCully, 1975). This includes members of the Rosids related to actinorhizal species, e.g., C. pepo (Ilina et al, 2018) as well as legumes (Mathesius et al, 2000b; Herrbach et al, 2014).…”

“…This is commonly found in Fabaceae (Popham, 1955; Byrne et al, 1977) and Cucurbitaceae (Van Tieghem and Douliot, 1886; Dubrovsky, 1986a; Demchenko and Demchenko, 2001; Ilina et al, 2018), which form a massive CLS (Figure 4). Interestingly, the cortical and endodermal cells of the same files of the parent root that constitute the developing LRP participate in CLS formation and the cells outside the LRP of the same files do not divide (Dubrovsky, 1986a; Demchenko and Demchenko, 2001; Ilina et al, 2018). This endodermis continuity between the parent and lateral roots is not always maintained, and the CLS on the flanks can be destroyed before LR emergence, as in Z. mays (Clowes, 1978a).…”
