Lateral-flow immunoassays for mycotoxins and phycotoxins: a review

Abstract: Natural toxin (for example mycotoxin and phycotoxin) contamination of food is of safety and economic concern, so much effort is devoted to the development of screening methods which enable the toxins to be continuously and widely monitored in food and feed. More generally speaking, rapid and non-instrumental assays for detection of a variety of food contaminants are generating ever-increasing scientific and technological interest because they enable high-throughput, economical, on-site monitoring of such conta… Show more

“…Yet, this approach seems to be restricted to straightforward detection mechanisms in which the target molecule reacts in a selective manner with a component of the solution to generate a colourimetric signal. This is a limitation compared to paper-based sensors, which enable complex detection schemes such as immunoassays 22 and DNA tests. 21 In recent years nanosensors have been changing this paradigm by enabling the detection of a multitude of analytes in solution and with the naked eye (Fig.…”

“…However, the influence of these factors is described only in general terms, without demonstrating the extent to which they change the characteristics of the analysis [7]. It has been reported that a detailed analysis of individual factors, such as the composition of antibody-colloidal gold conjugates [6] and the size of nanocarriers required for immobilization of antibodies [8].…”

“…Improvements in automated image and data analysis software for novice end users are required to improve the overall rapidity of analysis. The complex toxic effects of mycotoxins pose significant health risks to humans and animals and this necessitates for effective control and surveillance procedures [5][6][7][8][9]. The initial stages in the protection against mycotoxin contamination is through the adoption of good agricultural, storage and processing practices to ensure mycotoxin levels remain negligible or as low as reasonably achievable [10].…”
