Lateral Field Equivalent Networks and Piezocoupling Factors of Quartz Plates Driven in Simple Thickness Modes

Abstract: Abstruct-Lateral field excitation calculations have been carried out for the simple thickness modes of quartz plates. The results are presented in terms of piezoelectric coupling coefficients, and interpreted using equivalent networds. Exact circuits using transmission lines are obtained that include viscous loss. These are reduced to the more familiar lumped variety valid in the neighborhood of a single resonance. The element values are related to physical parameters of the vibrator. Calculations include coup… Show more

“…Introduction c urrently researchers have focused their attention on piezoelectric resonators with lateral electric field because of the development and improvement of acoustoelectric sensors for studying the properties of various liquids, including biological ones. There are many articles devoted to these resonators [1]- [24]. Their potentials have been clearly demonstrated in [9]- [20], [23], [24] for use as liquid sensors, although the main parameters of the resonators have not been adequately explored.…”

“…The literature on these resonators are numerous [4][5][6][7]. The slow TSh mode in AT-cut quartz plates can also be excited by a lateral or in-plane electric field (lateral field excitation or LFE) through the piezoelectric constant e 36 [8][9][10], but it was not used very often.…”

“…There are a vast number of papers and patents at present which describe these resonators, with most of them cited in [1]- [21]. These resonators show a greater sensitivity to varying liquid parameters than do traditional resonators with a longitudinal electric field.…”
