Lateral Condyle Fracture of the Humerus Among Children Attending a Pediatric Emergency Department

Abstract: Background:The lateral humeral condyle fractures in children accounts for one fifth of all elbow fractures. These fractures have a propensity to displace because of the pull of the extensor muscles on the condyle. Objectives:The aim of this study was to examine the epidemiology, injury patterns, complications, and predictors for conservative/surgical management in patients with lateral condyle humeral fractures between 0 and 18 years of age. Methods: This was a single-center retrospective study conducted betwee… Show more

“…Fractures of the lateral condyle peak at 6 to 7 years after injuries with a direct impact or significant varus force exerted through an extended elbow 1,8 . Localized pain lateral to the humerus after trauma should increase suspicion for this injury in children because these may be easily missed initially.…”

“…A lateral condyle fracture of the humerus is a common type of elbow injury. Because children under 10 years old have a large number of epiphysis at this location, and the lateral malleolus of humerus is used as the cartilage site, which destroys the overall robustness, it is prone to fracture, and the incidence rate of this disease is second to that of supracondylar fracture of humerus, accounting for 16.9% of patients with distal humerus fracture [1,2]. The main cause of the disease is indirect violence.…”

“…There is general agreement that nondisplaced and minimally displaced (≤2 mm) lateral condyle fractures (Weiss type 1; Song 1-2) can be successfully treated with cast immobilization. However, reportedly up to 26% of minimally displaced lateral condyle fractures further displace despite immobilization [14][15][16][17][18][19][20].…”
