Late Turonian polychaete communities recorded in the hemipelagic sediments of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin (Teplice Formation, Ohře and Dresden districts)

Abstract: The relatively rich sabellid and serpulid polychaete oryctocenoses of the hemipelagic Upper Turonian of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin are hereby revised. Seven species from six genera were identified and described from the present key locality of Úpohlavy near Lovosice. Ongoing revision of previously published literature as well as the recently collected material resulted in eight polychaete species from seven genera being identified from the hemipelagic Late Turonian sediments of the basin: sabellids Glomerul… Show more

“…Although some specimens of Neovermilia are also triangular in cross-section, this genus is usually more rounded with tunnel-shaped or circular cross-sections. Ziegler (1974Ziegler ( , 1984 described the present species from many nearshore localities of the Late Cenomanian to the Middle Turonian of the BCB, whereas specimens of N. ampullacea sensu stricto from the offshore locality Úpohlavy were described and discussed by Sklenář et al (2013).…”

“…Crinoid columnals have been found in the centre of D. bipartita coils at other rocky coast facies sites of the BCB, e.g. Velim, Kamajka, and Chrtníky, as well as in the centre of D. wegneri wegneri at Úpohlavy (Sklenář et al 2013) and in northern Germany (Jäger 1983).…”

“…ey are known from a range of water depths, from intertidal settings down to the abyssal plains (ten Hove & Kupriyanova 2009;Kupriyanova et al 2011). Since their first occurrence in the Mid-Triassic (Vinn & Mutvei 2009) and diversification during the Jurassic (Parsch 1956), serpulids have colonized a wide variety of Mesozoic environments (Ware 1975;Jäger 1983Jäger , 1993Jäger , 2005Jäger , 2011Jäger & Schubert 2008;Schlögl et al 2008;Vinn et al 2012;Sklenář et al 2013), including, from the Late Mesozoic, hydrocarbon seep environments, where serpulids are frequent but a relatively understudied faunal element (Campbell 2006;Vinn et al 2013). Serpulids have been also recorded in recent seeps (Olu et al 1996a, b), but do not show any specific adaptations to this environment, probably simply taking advantage of the abundant hard carbonate substrate available for colonization (Vinn et al 2013).…”
