Abstract: Definitive chemoradiotherapy for ESCC is effective with substantial toxicities. Further investigation is warranted to minimize the normal tissue toxicities.

“…In the long-term report by Ishikura et al, 10 severe heart-related adverse events occurred in about 7.2% of cases; Kumekawa et al 18 reported 8.2% and Morota et al 19 reported 5.4%. The present study had four observed cases (2.8%) of severe heartrelated adverse events of grade 3 or higher, including pleural effusion ( Table 3).…”

“…Primary tumour and lymph nodes were defined by CT, 18 F-FDG-PET and endoscopy, as gross tumour volume primary (GTVp) and GTV node (GTVn), respectively. The clinical target volume primary was GTVp plus 2-to 3-cm superior and inferior margins.…”

“…These hospital mortality rates are obviously higher than those for esophagectomy in Japan reported from specialized centers (2%) (Tachimori et al, 2009) or the nationwide registry (5%) (The Japan Esophageal Society). Second, definitive CRTx for resectable EC has the merit of preserving the esophagus, though it may increase late toxicity such as pericardial or pleural effusion Kumekawa et al, 2006). Pericardial and pleural effusion developed in nearly 20% of complete response patients, leading to 10-12% of treatment-related deaths Kumekawa et al, 2006).…”
