“…Persistent replication in these tissues has been connected to diverse severe conditions, such as end-organ disease, platelet-related illness, and potentially blinding uveitis (8). Persistent ZIKV in the reproductive tissue is possibly responsible for a growing number of cases of sexually transmitted disease, with some studies predicting that this may become a major route of infection in the future (10, 8692). Vaginal mucosa infection has also been related to fetal infection, further highlighting the impact of ZIKV persistence in the genital tract (9, 93).…”

“…Sexual transmission of Zika virus has been associated with condomless anal sex and vaginal sex and possibly also with fellatio (17). Among reported cases of sexually transmitted Zika virus infection, the longest reported period between sexual contact that might have transmitted Zika virus and symptom onset was 32-41 days (based on an incubation period of 3-12 days) (18).…”

“…Partners of either sex, who had not traveled and lived in areas without arthropodborne transmission, developed Zika virus disease (ZVD) after oral, vaginal or anal sex with infected men [3][4][5] . Infection of the partner occurred for up to 41 days after the index infection 6 .…”
