Late recurrence of malignant melanoma presenting as peritoneal "carcinomatosis"

Abstract: Malignant melanoma is a relatively rare malignancy that arises from melanocytes and accounts for approximately 1% of all malignancies reported in the United States. Malignant melanoma can develop in any part of the skin or mucosal membranes. It metastasizes to all organs of the body and often demonstrates unpredictable metastatic behavior. Late recurrence of malignant melanoma, defined as occurring 10 or more years after diagnosis and treatment, is a rare but characteristic metastatic behavior of malignant mel… Show more

“…Malignant melanoma is a rare tumor and its prevalence is increasing in the US where it represents 1% -3% of all cancers [2], it primarily affects the skin and mucous membranes. This tumor is characterized by a high malignant potential and high frequency of metastases headquartered variable [1]. The diagnosis of digestive metastases of malignant melanoma living subject is performed in 5% -7% of cases, while the autopsy of deceased patients, found 60% of cases [3].…”

“…(23) Signet ring cell carcinomatosis have cells with eccentric nuclei, mucin filled cytoplasm and diffuse infiltrating cells that can be found in the form of single cells, cords and nests. (25) The diagnosis of deciduoid mesothelioma will be supported by positivity of cytokeratin 5/6 and calretinin on immunohistochemical analysis, while the HMB-45 S-100 protein and keratin positivity metastatic carcinoma support malignant melanoma. (26,27) The clinical history, the lack of mitosis in decidual cells, negativity of calretinin, keratin, HMBE-1 and vimentin and PR positivity on immunohistochemical analysis support deciduosis.…”

“…More frequent are growing, i.e., non-necrotic melanin-containing peritoneal metastases of melanoma, with primary lesions both in extra-abdominal and intra-abdominal sites (Gao et al 2010;Lim et al 2012), including ocular melanoma (Knapp 1868). Peritoneal deposits of malignant melanoma can develop after a long delay, occurring 10 or more years after diagnosis of the primary tumor (Lee et al 2003). Apart from malignant melanoma, neurocutaneous melanocytosis and malignant meningeal melanosis can give rise to peritoneal metastases (Kurokawa et al 2013), in part via tumor cell spreading from ventriculoperitoneal shunting for the treatment of hydrocephalus occurring in this disorder (Faillace et al 1984;Gattuso et al 1995;Cajaiba et al 2008).…”
