“…Telethrion is characteristically straight and steep (Figures 1 and 5), its slopes descend to the sea with the deepest waters of the Northern Evoikos Gulf in front of them (>400 m - Figure 1). This morphology is the geomorphic expression of a presumably active fault zone directed roughly WNW-ESE, which bounds this part of the Northern Evoikos gulf graben to the N-NNE (Figure 4) Philip (1974), Katsikatsos et al (1984), Rondogianni (1984), Kranis (1999), Palyvos et al (2006), Van Andel & Perissoratis (2006) and references therein. Major thermal spring locations reproduced from Sfetsos (1988), volcanic centres from IGME maps.…”

“…On shore faults modified from the IGME geological map (Katsikatsos et al, 1984), and from this study. Major offshore fault traces are based on Van Andel & Perissoratis (2006), with modifications (see also Sakellariou et al, 2007 for smaller scale map). A great number of thermal springs are found in the Baths of Aedipsos (Loutra Aedipsou) and in Helia, which are accompanied by the emission of gasses.…”

“…Gatzea. Photo V. Dietrich According to regional reconstruction, a marine ingression, which led to the manifestation of the Pagasitic Gulf, allows only speculation, but has been estimated as Early Holocene (Van Andel and Perissoratis 2006;Sakellariou and Galanidou 2015). A certain calibration can be made, comparing the oceanographic and sedimentary results in the western basin of the North Evia Gulf (Sakellariou et al 2007) according to high-resolution sub-bottom profiles and gravity coring.During the last glacial period the water level of the North Evia Gulf was about 90m below the present sea level with lacustrine sediments that were formed during the last glaciation.…”

“…The structure of this area of Greece is dominated by a series of roughly WNW-ESE-trending extensional faults (accommodating extension of 15-20 mm/y) which have created a series of semi-asymmetric, grabens (Eliet et al, 1995). The most prominent of these extensional structures are the Gulf of Corinth and the Evoikos Gulf, both of which are WNW-ESE trending graben systems about 100 km long, and are bordered by N-dipping master faults, that are usually segmented along their strike giving a step type morphology (Roberts, et al, 1991;Westaway, 1991;Doutsos and Poulimenos, 1992;Roberts and Koukouvelas, 1996;Kokkalas et al, 2006;van Andel et al, 2006). The study area belongs to the Pelagonian zone of Central Greece.…”
