Late Paleozoic oceanic basalts hosted by the Char suture-shear zone, East Kazakhstan: Geological position, geochemistry, petrogenesis and tectonic setting

Abstract: At present, geochemical data are widely used for reconstructing geodynamic settings, especially, volcanic rocks of mafic composition, i.e., basalts, because they are widespread in many orogenic belts and are indicative of different geodynamic environments. In general, we propose the reconstruction of the tectonic settings of basalts according to their relationships with associated ocean plate stratigraphy (OPS) sediments, their petrogenesis and their geochemical features. In this paper, we present new data on g… Show more

“…Therefore, we believe that the Bidz ophiolite can be correlated with the Kekesentao-Buergen ophiolite zone (Windley et al, 1994;Wu et al, 2006;Xiao et al, 2009). A possible western continuation of the Kekesentao ophiolite zone could be the Char ophiolite belt in East Kazakhstan, which is also a suture-shear zone hosting Late Devonian oceanic basalts (Buslov et al, 2001Safonova et al, 2004Safonova et al, , 2012. The Char belt comprises three types of serpentine m elanges: (i) Early Paleozoic subduction m elange including meta-gabbro, metabasalt, metamorphosed deep-water siliceous sediments, eclogites, amphibolites and glaucophane schists; (ii) Ordovician ophiolitic m elange containing blocks of oceanic basaltic lavas and layers of siliceous mudstone and chert; (iii) Late CarboniferouseEarly Permian m elange separating tectonic sheets (Dobretsov et al, 1992;Iwata et al, 1996;Buslov et al, 2001Buslov et al, , 2004.…”

“…Эти чешуи сложены раннесреднекарбоновыми турбидитами и олисто-стромами, позднедевонско-раннекарбоновыми островодужными вулканитами и известняками, что предполагает позднекарбоновый-раннепермский возраст меланжа. Вулканические породы вместе с оке-аническими осадками формируют элементы океанической стратиграфии Палеоазиатского океана, ак-кретированные к Казахстанской активной окраине [Buslov et al, 2001;Safonova et al, 2012а].…”
