The identification of Late Carboniferous (317 ± 3 Ma) Daixi‐Wufenglou S‐type granites and Early Triassic (247 ± 2 Ma) Houzhang complex (comprising monzodiorite and monzogranite) in southeast China provides new insights into the bewildering tectonics of south China, before its final welding to the Eurasian continent. The Daixi‐Wufenglou granites have high K2O (4.01–6.54 wt%), A/CNK (1.02–1.34), high bulk initial 87Sr/86Sr (0.7094–0.7160) and low εNd(t) (−8.87 to −6.31), and low zircon εHf(t) (−8.1 to −1.9) and high δ18O (12.7–14.0‰), indicating derivation by partial melting of a Neoproterozoic basement as a result of the input of mantle‐derived heat in a back‐arc extensional setting, triggered by rollback of the Paleo‐Pacific plate subduction beneath the outboard proto‐Japan arc. The monzodiorites are shoshonitic, characterized by high K, Ni, Cr, and Mg#, and the monzogranites are adakitic, defined by high Sr/Y, (La/Yb)n and low Y, Yb. They have similar 87Sr/86Sr (0.7085–0.7087), εNd(t) (−5.92 to −5.34), and εHf(t) (−7.5 to −2.5), indicating their petrogenetic linkage. The monzodiorites and monzogranites represent early crystallization phases (cumulates) and residual melts of a mantle‐derived magma, generated from a metasomatically enriched mantle. Integrating these data with other geological information from south China and neighboring countries, we propose a new model for the tectonic evolution of the Late Paleozoic south China, which was controlled by the subduction of the Paleo‐Pacific Ocean plate. A distal continental back‐arc setting was produced by slab rollback in the early stages, and an active continental margin environment was produced by the accretion of the proto‐Japan arc in the later stages.

The Permian Akiyoshi Belt, which is the oldest unmetamorphosed accretionary complex in Southwest Japan, plays an important role in understanding the origin of the Japanese Islands; however, its tectonic affinity is still not well constrained. Herein, we present the first Hf isotopic data for U-Pb dated detrital zircons of the Late Permian sandstones in the Akiyoshi Belt. Almost all the late Palaeozoic detrital zircons yielded highly positive ɛ Hf (t) values compatible with a juvenile source, suggesting that the major provenance of the trench sediments was from the South China block and not from the Bureya-Jiamusi-Khanka massif. Northeast trending Yong'an Basin, southeast South China Craton, preserves a Permian-Jurassic, marine to continental, siliciclastic-dominated, retroarc foreland basin succession. Modal and detrital zircon data, along with published paleocurrent data, sedimentary facies, and euhedral to subhedral detrital zircon shapes, indicate derivation from multicomponent, nearby sources with input from both the interior of the craton to the northwest and from an inferred arc accretionary complex to the southeast. The detrital zircon U-Pb age spectra range in age from Archean to early Mesozoic, with major age groups at 2000-1700 Ma, 1200-900 Ma, 400-340 Ma, and 300-240 Ma. In addition, Early Jurassic strata include zircon detritus with ages of 200-170 Ma. Regional geological relations suggest that Precambrian and Early Paleozoic detritus was derived from the inland Wuyi Mountain region and Yunkai Massif of the South China Craton. Sources for Middle Paleozoic to early Mesozoic detrital zircons include input from beyond the currently exposed China mainland. Paleogeographic reconstruction in East Asia suggests derivation from an active convergent plate margin along the southeastern rim of the craton that incorporated part of Southwest Japan and is related to the subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Ocean. Integration of the geologic and provenance records of the Yong'an Basin with the time equivalent Yongjiang and Shiwandashan basins that lie to the southwest and south, respectively, provides an integrated record of the subduction of the Paleo-Pacific Ocean along the southeast margin of the South China Craton and termination of subduction of the Paleo-Tethys beneath its southwest margin in Permo-Triassic.
