Late outcomes following percutaneous coronary interventions: Results from a large, observational registry

Abstract: T he introduction of coronary stent implantation heralded a major advance in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), with dramatically improved in-hospital mortality and morbidity compared with plain old balloon angioplasty for the treatment of coronary artery disease. Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have established the superior long-term safety and efficacy of bare-metal stenting (BMS) compared with plain old balloon angioplasty (1-3). The introduction of drug-eluting stents (DES) resulted in a… Show more

“…The in-hospital rates for MACE (2.7%), TLR (1%) and myocardial infarction (1.8%) of this registry are similar to those of another large observational registry 11 with rates for MACE of 3.1%, for TLR of 1% and for myocardial infarction of 2.6%.…”

“…Besides manuscripts describing ST-elevation myocardial infarction patients, several important studies were excluded, such as Appleby et al [10] and Rosner et al [11], both describing outcomes in patients with single-vessel disease as well as MVCAD (Fig. 1).…”

“…Any evidence on the adequacy of revascularization can be, therefore, derived from registries or trials with different designs. A metaanalysis [9] recently showed a benefit of CR over IR in terms of survival, but selected studies encompassed an extremely long time interval (from 1970 to September 2012), including patients affected by single-vessel CAD [10,11] as well as MVCAD.…”

“…The advent of coronary stent implants has revolutionized the percutaneous treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD), with significant improvement in in-hospital morbidity and mortality compared with plain old balloon angioplasty 1 . Coronary artery stenting with a metallic stent, especially a drug-eluting stent (DES), may be regarded as the gold standard treatment for patients with obstructive CAD, ranging from stable angina to acute coronary syndrome 2, 3.…”
