“…Although the usefulness of surveillance CT scan remains unclear (9, 10), some studies have suggested CT as an imaging modality for routine follow-up (9,11). However, there is only one study that describes imaging findings of recurrent bladder cancer after cystectomy (4), and that study included a relatively small number of patients over a 4-year period.…”

“…Also, looking at the literature, most evidence suggesting that the distal ureteral involvement is associated with increased risk of upper tract recurrence following cystectomy was provided by studies which analyzed ureteral tissues removed en bloc with bladder during cystectomy rather than those on the results of intraoperative frozen section analysis of ureteral margins [5,13,16] . Meanwhile, Solsona et al [17] reported that most of the late recurrences after cystectomy were observed in the upper tract with multiple tumors, prostate involvement, and organ-confi ned tumors being signifi cant predictive factors. However, patients included in their series were quite different in characteristics from those included in ours, and they did not evaluate margin positivity of ureteral marginal status at cystectomy.…”

“…4,7 In our series urothelial recurrence after RC is more commonly seen in conjunction with positive urinary cytology, as noted in 57 of 101 patients. Excluding the 16 patients with metastatic disease treated with chemotherapy we observed that 57 of 85 had urothelial recurrence after positive cytology after RC.…”

“…[3][4][5][6] Risk factors for upper tract recurrence have been reported to be distal ureteral involvement at cystectomy, carcinoma in situ and tumor advanced pathological stage. 4,7 Urinary cytology has been routinely used for followup in patients with bladder cancer since its introduction by Papanicolau and Marshall. 8 The usefulness of urinary cytology for evaluating patients with known bladder cancer was recently questioned because assay sensitivity is thought to be high in patients with high grade TCC but poor for low grade TCC.…”
