Late Neoproterozoic to Early Palaeozoic palaoegeography of the Holy Cross Mountains (Central Europe): an integrated approach

Abstract: Study of geochemistry, examination of isotope ages of detrital minerals, palaeomagnetic analysis, and a study of the trilobites were performed to provide constraints on the palaeogeographical position of the Holy Cross Mountains in Late Ediacaran–Early Palaeozoic time. The geochemical results indicate an active continental margin or continental island arc provenance of the Ediacaran sediments. Sediments from a passive continental margin were deposited here during the Cambrian and Ordovician. The palaeomagnetic… Show more

“…A palaeomagnetic study of the Bardo diabase pro vides a pre-fold ing palaeomagnetic pole con cordant with the lat est Si lu rian seg ment of the ap par ent po lar wan der path for Baltica (Nawrocki, 2000). The re sults of the palaeomagnetic cor re la tion are con sis tent with those of subse quent 40 Ar-Ar 39 de ter mi na tions of plagioclase grains derived from the diabase (Nawrocki et al, 2007). Both age es tima tions are, how ever, not suf fi ciently pre cise.…”

“…The 40 Ar-Ar 39 sam ple stud ied re vealed the pres ence of two pla teaus for the low and high tem per a ture steps, which were 432 ± 2 Ma and 425 ± 11 Ma, re spec tively. On the other hand, the step size weight ing in di cated that the sec tion of the age spec trum from the step-heat ing run, from 0.4 to 0.97, was 424 ± 6 Ma (Nawrocki et al, 2007). Ac cord ing to Krzemiñski (2004) the Bardo diabase in tru sion may re cord a de tach ment of the Ma³opolska Block from Baltica, and its trans la tion along the craton mar gin dur ing Late Lud low-Emsian times up to its pres ent-day po si tion (see also Narkiewicz, 2002).…”

“…Although small relocations of particular structural units of the TESZ took place during the Variscan orogeny (Konon 2006(Konon , 2007, large-scale post-Silurian displacements are questionable. Palaeomagnetic data from the Nawodzice Sandstones (Nawrocki et al 2007), Mójcza Limestone (Schätz et al 2006), as well as from the Bardo Diabase (Nawrocki 2000;Nawrocki et al 2013) indicate a similar position of the Małopolska Block in relation to Baltica since the Cambrian. This seems to be confirmed also by the presence of similar endemic faunas (e.g.…”
