The Mississippian (Early Carboniferous) is generally a period of scarce carbonate buildups in South China. This study documents outcrops of stromatolite mounds at Mengcun and Helv villages, in Laibin City, Guangxi Province, South China. The stromatolite mounds contain various stromatolite morphologies including laminar, wavy-laminar, domal or hemispheroidal, bulbous, and flabellate-growth columns. Intramound rocks are brachiopod floatstone and dark thin-bedded laminated micrite limestone. Individual stromatolites at Mengcun village are generally 3-6 cm thick and morphologically represent relatively shallow-water laminar (planar and wavy-undulated stromatolites) and deeper-water domal, bulbous and columnar forms. Where mounds were formed, the stromatolites continued growing upward up to 60 cm thick. Thrombolitic fabrics also occur but are not common. Stromatolite microscopic structure shows the bulk of the lamination to consist of wavy microbialite and discrete thin micritic laminae. These mounds are intercalated in deep-water fore-reef talus breccia, packstone formed as a bioclastic debris flow and thin-bedded limestone containing common chert layers of the Tatang Formation (late Viséan). Further evidence supporting the deep-water setting of the stromatolite mounds are: (1) a laterally thinning horizon of brachiopod floatstone containing deepwater, small, thin-shelled brachiopods, peloidal micritic sediments and low-diversity, mixed fauna (e.g., thin-shelled brachiopods, tube-like worms and algae) that have been interpreted as storm deposits, (2) common fore-reef talus breccias, (3) lack of sedimentary structures indicating current action, (4) preservation of lamination with sponge spicules, and (5) lack of bioturbation suggesting that the stromatolites grew in a relatively low energy, deep-water setting. The stromatolite mounds are the first described stromatolite mounds in Mississippian strata of South China and contain evidence that supports interpretations of (1) growth history of Mississippian microbial buildups and (2) environmental controls on stromatolite growth and lithification.

The definition of a fossil ecological community from fossil associations has always been problematic. Determining coevality of the members of a fossil association has posed one of the most ravelling problems in this matter. However, in case of relicts of fossil reefs, this problem seems, to some extent, solvable due to the frequency of fossil findings in life position. In addition, the interaction between these fossils poses the possibility of performing statistical analyses in order to effectively quantify the relation that existed among the members of a fossil association as well as between fossil associations. In this paper, we present a method to obtain fossil communities by means of a combined algorithm (WPGMA‐Jaccard Index) performed onto 14 fossil associations from the Cipit boulders from the Middle‐to‐Late Triassic St Cassian Formation (Dolomites, Northeastern Italy), which have been previously reported in the literature. Presence/absence data of environmentally diagnostic micro‐encrusters and hexactinellid sponges were input into a matrix, which underwent cluster analysis. This analysis rendered a phenogram, where five different communities (phena) could be recognized. Each community has its particular palaeoenvironmental constraints, defined in turn by the particular array of micro‐encrusters/hexactinellid sponges. The method used in this work could be successfully applied in other Triassic reef deposits, taking into account the extensive amount of reports performed in the last decade.

Stenolaemate bryozoans with their stable calcitic skeletons play a signiWcant role in reef building. In the Middle Devonian Sabkhat Lafayrina reef complex (Western Sahara), bryozoans are abundant and diverse. Although they do not form part of the principal framework of reefs, bryozoans are involved signiWcantly in reef growth, especially in the initial stage. In this way, bryozoans are important with respect to initiating reef growth. They contribute greatly to sediment stabilization, making it possible for principal reef builders to grow on hardened and stabilized substrates, and also play sediment-baZing and sedimentWlling roles. The aim of this study is to document the diversity of bryozoans in a Middle Devonian reef complex and to estimate their potential for initiation and contribution to reef structures.
