International audienceWe propose a basin-scale (~300 x 100 km) study of the pre-salt to salt sedimentary fillfrom the Suez rift based on outcrop and subsurface data. This study is a new synthesisof existing and newly acquired data using an integrated approach with (1) basin-scalesynthesis of the structural framework, (2) stratigraphic architecture characterization ofthe entire Suez rift using sequence stratigraphy concepts, (3) lithologic mapsreconstruction and interpretation, (4) isopach / depocenter maps interpolation toquantify sedimentary volumes and (5) quantification of the sediment supply, meancarbonate and evaporite accumulation rates and their integration into the rift dynamic.The Gulf of Suez is ca. 300 km long and up to 80 km wide rift structure, resulting fromthe late Oligocene to early Miocene rifting of the African and Arabian plates. Thestratigraphic architecture has recorded five main stages of rift evolution, from riftinitiation to finally tectonic quiescence characterized by salt deposits.Rift initiation (ca. 1-4 Myr duration): the Suez rift was initiated at the end of theOligocene along the NNW-SSE trend of the Red Sea with evidences of activevolcanism. Continental to lacustrine deposits only occurred in isolated depocenters.Sediment supply was relatively low.Rift widening (ca. 3 Myr duration): the rift propagated from south to north (Aquitanian),with first marine incursions from the Mediterranean Sea. The rift was subdivided intonumerous depocenters controlled by active faults. Sedimentation was characterized bysmall carbonate platforms and associated sabkha deposits to the south and shallowopen marine condition to the north with mixed sedimentation organized into an overalltransgressive trend.Rift climax (ca. 5 Myr duration): the rift was then flooded during Burdigalian timesrecording the connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. The faultswere gradually connected and reliefs on the rift shoulders were high as evidenced by astrong increase of the uplift/subsidence rates and sediment supply. Three maindepocenters were then individualized across the rift and correspond to the Darag,Central and Southern basins. Sedimentation was characterized by very large Gilbert-type deltas along the eastern margin and associated submarine fans and turbiditesystems along the basin axis. Isolated carbonate platforms and reefs mainly occurredin the Southern Basin and along tilted block crests.Late syn-rift to rift narrowing (ca. 4 Myr duration): during the Langhian, the basinrecorded several falls of relative sea level and bathymetry in the rift axis wasprogressively reduced. The former reliefs induced during the rift climax were quicklydestroyed as evidenced by the drastic drop in sediment supply. The stratigraphic succession of the subsurface Pliocene-Quaternary post-rift megasequence in the north-central part of the Nile Delta includes the rock units; Kafr El-Sheikh Formation (Early-Middle Pliocene), El-Wastani Formation (Late Pliocene), Mit-Ghamr and Bilqas formations (Quaternary). These rock units were herein analyzed according to the sequence stratigraphic principles to investigate the stratigraphic architecture and discuss the depositional events influencing the evolution of the given megasequence. Accordingly, seven 3rd order depositional sequences were encountered, of which six 3rd order seismic depositional sequences (sequences 1-6) are encountered in the Early-Middle Pliocene Kafr El-Sheikh Formation, whereas the seismic depositional sequence-7 includes the Quaternary rock units. Moreover, the sequences nos. 1 and 7 were further subdivided, on the bases of high-resolution sequence stratigraphy into 8 and 11 4 th order subsequences respectively. The results of the sequence stratigraphic analyses provided that the depositional evolution of the examined Pliocene-Quaternary megasequence represents a complete prograding depositional phase during the Nile Delta history. The lower part of Kafr El-Sheikh Formation (sequences 1, 2, 3 and 4) was deposited as a thick outer marine shelf succession over which the younger rock units were deposited. However, the depositional sequences nos. 5 & 6 of Kafr El-Sheikh subenvironments, stratigraphic section and genetic class.

In this work, the petrophysical properties of Abu Madi reservoir in El-Qara Field at northern Nile Delta Basin (NDB) were evaluated depending on well logging data of two wells: El-Qara-2 and El-Qara-3. This evaluation revealed that in El-Qara-2 well, the promising gas zone is detected between depths of 3315 and 3358 m, while in El-Qara-3 well, the best gas interval is detected between depths of 3358 and 3371 m. In addition to the production test parameters (gas rate, condensate rate, gas gravity, condensate gravity, gas-to-oil ratio, flowing tubing head pressure, flowing bottom hole pressure, and static bottom hole pressure), the calculated petrophysical parameters (shale volume, total porosity, effective porosity, and water saturation) for both intervals were relatively similar. This confirms that the investigated wells were drilled at the same reservoir interval within Abu Madi Fm. The depth variation in the examined zones was attributed to the presence of buried normal faults between El-Qara-2 and El-Qara-3 wells. This observation may be supported from the tectonic influence during the deposition of Abu Madi Fm. as a portion of the Messinian syn-rift megasequence beneath the NDB.
