Interpreting the effect of regional climate fluctuations on Quercus robur L. trees under a temperate continental climate (southern Romania) Received: 6 July 2017; Accepted: 27 November 2017 Abstract: To determine oak tree sensitivity to climate fluctuations as a precipitation predictor, we eliminated monthly climate data and computed the growth-precipitation correlation using mean daily values calculated in time intervals. Precipitation from March through May is the primary limiting factor in intra-annual tree-ring growth for Quercus robur L. in southern Romania. Bootstrap correlations between the residual series and monthly average precipitation showed a positive dependence (r = 0.4). Using CLIMTREG software and daily climate data, we obtained correlation values of (0.6) and a better understanding of on-going tree radial growth. We found that the oak growth process is active during two distinct periods in the study area, December 22 th -February 10 th (earlywood) and March 04 th -June 13 th (latewood). For the studied oak tree population, the correlation with climate was positive with respect to precipitation and negative with respect to temperature. This indicates that annual tree-ring formation was influenced by the precipitation regime and frequency and by the degree of drought. These results also indicate that different behaviours occur among the examined earlywood and latewood under the same climatic conditions, which were then analysed.

The aim is to introduce and characterize a new experimental demonstrative model contributing to the increase of measurement accuracy, in terms of minimum detectable activity (MDA) and background reduction, for the analysis of samples having low concentrations in tritium and radiocarbon on Quantulus 1220. The clue is related to the qualitative and quantitative differences between tritium and carbon‐14 inventories of the pulp used to manufacture the cups involved in noncatalytic combustion of samples by flame oxidation method. The quality of the experimental results depends on the temporal origin of the wood from which the pulp/cellulose was extracted/purified, the specific inventory contributing to the threshold level of the MDA for the beta‐emitting radionuclide to be investigated. Finally, the aim is to create and to use such a 100% old cellulose combustion cups for determining low concentrations of these radionuclides. It may be obtained by an adapted technology following the literature data and may be recommended for routine analyses of environmental samples coming from areas with no nuclear or minor nuclear influences, and also for low‐level biological samples. This first attempt resulted in improvement of measurement performances up to 400% for carbon‐14 and by approximately 50% for tritium.

Flow reconstructions in the Upper Missouri River Basin using riparian tree rings

River flow reconstructions are typically developed using tree rings from montane conifers that cannot reflect flow regulation or hydrologic inputs from the lower portions of a watershed. Incorporating lowland riparian trees may improve the accuracy of flow reconstructions when these trees are physically linked to the alluvial water table. We used riparian plains cottonwoods (Populus deltoides ssp. monilifera) to reconstruct discharge for three neighboring rivers in the Upper Missouri River Basin: the Yellowstone (n = 389 tree cores), Powder (n = 408), and Little Missouri Rivers (n = 643). We used the Regional Curve Standardization approach to reconstruct log‐transformed discharge over the 4 months in early summer that most highly correlated to tree ring growth. The reconstructions explained at least 57% of the variance in historical discharge and extended back to 1742, 1729, and 1643. These are the first flow reconstructions for the Lower Yellowstone and Powder Rivers, and they are the furthest downstream among Rocky Mountain rivers in the Missouri River Basin. Although mostly free‐flowing, the Yellowstone and Powder Rivers experienced a shift from early‐summer to late‐summer flows within the last century. This shift is concurrent with increasing irrigation and reservoir storage, and it corresponds to decreased cottonwood growth. Low‐frequency flow patterns revealed wet conditions from 1870 to 1980, a period that includes the majority of the historical record. The 1816–1823 and 1861–1865 droughts were more severe than any recorded, revealing that drought risks are underestimated when using the instrumental record alone.
