Recent studies show that the global flux of river-derived sediment reaching the coasts and oceans is about 15-19 x 10 9 tons per year. New sediment budgets for the major Asian river systems (e.g.,Yellow, Yangtze, Mekong, Ganges-Brahmaputra, etc.) suggest that 30-50% of their sediment load has been retained in the lower channel reaches to form an extensive subaerial delta plain, while the rest is discharged to the sea. Of the sediment load reaching the ocean, about half has been found to accumulate near the river mouth as a proximal subaqueous delta clinothem. However, the remaining sediment is found to be transported up to 600-800 km alongshore, ultimately being deposited as a shore-parallel middle-shelf clinothem.These clinoform deposits are generally <100 km in across-shelf width, 20-40 m thick nearshore, and pinch-out gradually seaward at 40-90 m water depth.A secondary nearshore depocenter can usually be found along the shelf away from the river mouth, with mud-lobe accumulation up to 40-50 m thick locally. Except for a few systems with shelf-indenting canyons (e.g., Ganges-Brahmaputra and Indus), most of Asian riverderived sediments are trapped on the inner and middle shelf, unable to reach the deep ocean (i.e., >150 m) despite having been transported hundreds of kilometers from their mouths.

A 50 m-long radiocarbon dated core was studied through sediment and pollen analysis to reconstruct the Holocene mangrove and environmental changes at a coastal site Pakhiralaya in the Sundarban Biosphere Reserve in the western Ganga-Brahmaputra Delta, India. This biosphere reserve harbours a diverse mangrove ecosystem and supports a large number of people living in the area. Pollen and stratigraphic data indicate the existence of a brackish water estuarine mangrove swamp forest in this area during the last 9880 cal yr B.P. The development of the mangrove forest is not shown continuously in the Holocene record. Rapid transgression of the sea (9240 cal yr B.P.) halted the development of the mangrove. After about 8420 cal yr B.P. mangrove recolonised the area and persisted until 7560 cal yr B.P. as a result of a balance between the sedimentation and sea level fluctuation. The mangrove disappeared again from the site until 4800 cal yr B.P. because of a high sedimentation rate and possible delta progradation with loss of habitats. The reappearance of mangrove at the study site occurred with a return of a brackish water estuarine environment and the site then gradually became supra tidal during the mid-late Holocene. The continuity of the mangrove development and dynamics was interrupted by the fluctuating sea levels. Climatic fluctuations were viewed as an indirect factor influencing the mangrove ecosystem.

This study analyzes three borehole cores to examine the sedimentary facies of the extensive floodplain of the Mekong River in Cambodia and discusses the relationship between sedimentary facies and surface topography. Sedimentary facies vary according to surface topographic features on the floodplain. Core PA, located near the end of an abandoned channel, records the history of the formation and subsequent filling of the channel during the Holocene. The channel was filled with interlaminated sand and mud overlain by grayish brown to dull reddish brown stiff mud during the last 4500 years. Core CK was located on the southwestern edge of an area of scroll bars and swales between the Mekong and Bassac rivers . In this core, muddy overbank deposits overlie sandy deposits that probably represent a point bar. The accumulation of the overbank deposits may have started around 2000 cal yr BP. Core TA was obtained from the floodplain along the west bank of the Tonle Sap River. Mottled stiff mud containing granules occurs about 1 m below the surface and overlies subangular granules. Muddy overbank deposits corresponding to those of the other two boreholes are not present at the site despite frequent flooding of the Tonle Sap River.
