Late embryogenesis and immature development of Osmia rufa cornigera (Rossi) (Hymenoptera : Megachilidae)

Abstract: Summary — The first instar larva of Osmia rufa comigera (Rossi) remains within the egg chorion except for spiracular line splits that allow the exchange of atmospheric gas as this stadium consumes embryonic fluids. The second instar larva is the first stadium to consume pollen and nectar. The second through fifth instar larvae are aggressive when disturbed. Immature development and larval behavior are compared to other Osmia species.

“…On average, the egg stage lasts for 7. 1 days at a constant temperature of 22°C, 4 days at 23°C, and 3 days at 28˚C (Tasei, 1973;Rust, Torchio, & Trostle, 1989;Giejdasz & Wilkaniec, 2002). It is worth noting, that in Tasei's (1973) study the egg stage was measured together with the larval stage until the first moulting of the larva.…”

“…The development of the red mason bee is similar to that of other spring species of the Osmia genus. The embryonic and larval development, which is divided into five growth stages, occurs in the spring, while the prepupal and pupal stages take place in the summer (Tasei, 1973;Rust, Torchio, & Trostle, 1989;Giejdasz & Wilkaniec, 2002). In the prepupal stage, the metabolic processes slow down.…”

“…Five larval stages were identified on the basis of both size and presence of the previous instar exuvia (Rust et al, 1989). Because of their small size, larvae belonging to the first, second, third and fourth instars were pooled before analysis (sample 1), while the fifth instar larvae were separated into the following three subgroups: pollen-eating V instar (sample 2), mature V instar (sample 3) and diapausing V instar (sample 4).…”

“…The shortening of the day length in autumn coupled with the lowering of temperature is sufficient to induce adult diapause in many insects (De Wilde et al 1968;Rust et al 1989;Krafsur et al 1999;Herman and Tatar 2001), whereas in several Osmia species, it is dependent on temperature and independent of photoperiod (Bosch and Kemp 2000;Bosch et al 2010;Sgolastra et al 2010).…”
