A signifi cant uncertainty exists in the defi - nition of both surface pattern and subsurface continuity (i.e., coupling vs. decoupling) of active normal faults in the Apennines. In this study, we investigated the epicentral area of the MS = 6.9, 1980 Irpinia earthquake— one of the most destructive historical earthquakes in Italy—based on detailed topography analyses, morphostratigraphic and structural data, and new age constraints from Quaternary deposits. The active tectonic behavior of the study area is controlled by a series of subparallel, mainly WNW-ESE– to NW-SE–trending, dominantly extensional faults spanning over the southern Apennines axial belt. A large part of the active fault strands is characterized by a subdued topographic expression, as a result of the young age of extensional faulting initiation, and of relatively low mean slip rates. In addition, as already known from long historical seismicity records elsewhere, long-lasting quiescence might alternate with clusters of closely spaced, strong earthquakes. The long-term morphostratigraphic record confi rms that long-lasting quiescence may punctuate fault activity, with major implications for seismic hazard assessment. The relatively smallsized cumulative fault throws estimated by surface evidence contrast with subsurface information provided by crustal-scale cross sections and seismological evidence, which both suggest the occurrence at depth of largedisplacement, mature fault zones capable of nucleating large earthquakes. Furthermore, although the surface distribution of active fault strands overlaps the belt affected by present-day low-magnitude seismicity and by large historical earthquakes, a mismatch in the attitude and kinematics of shallow versus deep faults is unraveled by a comparison of surface geological versus seismological data sets. This feature suggests a decoupling between surface and deep fault zones, and that outcropping fault planes cannot always be straightforwardly traced down to hypocentral depths, particularly in fold-andthrust belts characterized by strong rheological contrasts. On the other hand, stress inversion from outcropping active faults and from earthquake focal mechanisms indicates a general consistency of the stress fi eld, thus suggesting that a homogeneous late Quaternary extensional regime produces complex reactivation of the inherited, articulated fault network affecting different structural levels of the southern Apennine

We derive the discrete fracture network (DFN) of a Lower Cretaceous carbonate platform succession exposed at Mt. Faito (Southern Apennines), which represents a good outcrop analogue of the coeval productive units of the buried Apulian Platform in the Basilicata oilfields. A stochastic distribution of joints has been derived by sampling at two different scales of observation. At the outcrop scale, we measured fracture attributes by means of scan lines. At a larger scale, we extracted fracture attributes from a 3D model. This multiscale survey showed the occurrence of an arresting bed for through-going fractures, which is characterized by a low relative permeability, determining a vertical compartmentalization. The DFN model, obtained by integrating fieldwork and numerical modelling by means of the 3D-Move5 software, shows a well-defined relationship of permeability and fracture porosity with the relative connectivity of the fracture network. The latter is influenced by the length and aperture and to a lesser extent by the fracture intensity. The permeability distribution obtained for our outcrop analogue can be used to inform modelling of the Basilicata oilfield reservoirs, although the different burial history between the exposed Apennine Platform and the buried Apulian Platform must be taken into account.

A regional study on late burial syntectonic dolomites and syntectonic calcite and quartz veins occurring in the hemipelagic Triassic-Jurassic succession of the Lagonegro Basin (southern Apennines) was carried out by integrating fieldwork with structural, fluid inclusion, and geochemical investigations on both surface and subsurface samples. The main goal was to characterize the parent fluids – partly dolomitizing – channelled along a major, out of sequence thrust zone. Calcite veins from the deeper tectonic mélange zone that occurs at the base of the allochthonous wedge – as evidenced by numerous oil wells – were investigated as well. The results point out that the fluids at peak burial conditions, achieved during the first deformation stage, were characterized by temperatures of 120-140 °C and salinities averaging 2 wt % NaCl eq, whereas those channelled along the late (out of sequence) thrust zone and responsible for partial dolomitization of the succession had slightly lower temperatures (Th=95±10 °C) and salinities in the range of slightly modified to normal marine seawater (mean at 3.7 wt % NaCl eq). Similar low salinities are encountered in late dolomites from other Fold and Thrust Belts of the Italian peninsula. The most probable source for the fluids channelled along the investigated out of sequence thrust zone is represented by Miocene marine pore-waters expelled from the tectonic mélange zone. A role on fluid salinities appears to be played by the different lithologies of the Fold and Thrust Belts décollement surface
