Late diagnosis of intraplacental choriocarcinoma co-existing with fetomaternal haemorrhage causing fetal demise: A case report

Abstract: Intraplacental choriocarcinoma (IC) is a rare disease, occurring in approximately 1 in 50,000 pregnancies. A 33-year-old woman, gravida 2 para 0, sustained an intrauterine fetal death due to fetomaternal haemorrhage (FMH) at 36 weeks of gestation after presenting with decreased fetal movements in the days prior. The placenta macroscopically appeared normal. However, histological examination revealed an intraplacental choriocarcinoma. Assessment of this woman's quantitative beta human chorionic gonadotropin (bH… Show more

“…When the blood type of the fetus is incompatible with that of the mother, antibodies against fetal RBCs are produced in the mother. These antibodies pass through the placenta and cause the destruction of fetal RBCs ( Troia et al, 2019 ; Hookins and Vatsayan, 2020 ; Monteiro et al, 2021 ). 16 weeks is the earliest placenta rupture, so pregnant women at 16 weeks are at risk for FMH ( Akorsu et al, 2019 ; Athiel et al, 2020 ).…”

“…It may lead to fetal anemia, jaundice, edema, and even death ( Carr et al, 2022 ). There are numerous causes of placenta rupture, but the most common are trauma and intrauterine death ( Davis, 2019 ; Hsia et al, 2019 ; Hookins and Vatsayan, 2020 ; Monteiro et al, 2021 ). In the United States, 40% of pregnant women die from trauma, according to statistics ( Krywko et al, 2022 ).…”
