Late Cretaceous Bauru Group biota from Southern Goiás state, Brazil: history and fossil content

Abstract: The southern Goiás state region of Central Brazil has an extensive and informative record of fossil biota. Particularly over the last five years, there has been a great increase in fossil finds, which has enabled a greater understanding of this region's fauna and flora during the Late Cretaceous. In this article, we provide an updated synthesis of the biota from the Cretaceous of the southern Goiás state, the record of plants, gastropods, turtles, crocodilians, titanosaurs, and theropod dinosaurs.

“…The Bauru Group is the Upper Cretaceous Sequence of the Bauru Basin, the largest sedimentary basin of that age in South America and one of the best studied continental basins in Brazil, well documented throughout 500 outcrops and thousands of well logs (Batezelli et al, 2019). Extending over 330,000 km 2 in an elongated NNE area in south-eastern and central Brazil, the Bauru Basin is best documented in the northwestern Paraná, western São Paulo and Minas Gerais states, with vast areas still to be systematically explored in southwestern Goiás, southeastern Mato Grosso and eastern Mato Grosso do Sul states (Barcelos & Suguio, 1987;Batezelli et al, 2007;Basilici & Dal'Bó, 2010;Menegazzo et al, 2016, Candeiro et al, 2020.…”

“…In Brazil, records of dinosaurs are widely known from the Bauru Group (Late Cretaceous), mostly from the Triângulo Mineiro region, in the state of Minas Gerais (e.g., Kellner & Campos, 2000;Campos et al, 2005;Faria et al, 2015;Bandeira et al, 2018;González-Riga et al, 2019) and from western São Paulo state (Santucci & Arruda-Campos, 2011;Bandeira et al, 2016;Delcourt & Iori, 2018). More recently, some new findings are known from the other poorly explored regions, such as the outcrops in Goiás (Candeiro et al, 2018(Candeiro et al, , 2020. However, due to the historical and highly fossiliferous nature of the units, especially the Triângulo Mineiro area, several contributions discuss the geological and paleontological re-search performed by geoscientists in this region (e.g., Candeiro, 2007;Peyerl et al, 2015;Candeiro & Figueiroa, 2017).…”
