“…We suggest that the Caruthersville dome was uplifted relative to the rest of the Pascola arch at a transpressional intersection of these fabrics. This model suggests that the Caruthersville dome is a predecessor to the Lake County uplift (Figure 18), which occurs over the transpressive bend in the present-day New Madrid seismic zone (Russ, 1982;Van Arsdale and TenBrink, 2000). An implication is that Holocene deformation and seismicity at New Madrid is occurring on structures that have a history of similar movement as far back as the late Paleozoic.…”

“…The main constraints on total deformation within the NMSZ are 15 m of post-Eocene uplift within the Reelfoot fault zone (Van Arsdale and TenBrink, 2000), the occurrence of three slip events along the Reelfoot fault over the past 2400 yr (Kelson et al, 1996), and the occurrence of three large strike-slip events of comparable size on the SW arm since 800 A.D. (and possibly two or three additional strike-slip events since 4035 B.C.) (Tuttle and Schweig, 1995).…”

“…According to Liu et al, (1997), the P-wave velocity (Figure 4) increases abruptly across this layer, giving rise to the first refracted energy observed in Figure 3A. In the Memphis area, the Pliocene strata directly overlies the confining unit (Eocene and Oligocene) and Miocene deposits are missing, indicating that after the deposition of the Jackson formation (the upper stratigraphic element of the confining unit), the area may have undergone significant erosion within the fluvial depositional system (Van Arsdale and TenBrink, 2000), and that erosional features (e.g. paleochannels) might be preserved at the top of the confining unit.…”
