Late Chattian Larger Foraminifera From the Prebetic Domain (Se Spain): New Data on Shallow Benthic Zone 23

Abstract: The Rebaldí section, a succession of late Oligocene limestones 3 km north of the Benitatxell section, shows a similar association with Peneroplis thomasi, A. asmariensis, M. complanatus, Neorotalia viennoti, N. lithothamnica, Heterostegina aff. assilinoides, Spiroclypeus blanckenhorni, Cycloclypeus mediterraneus, A. bohdanowiczi, and Risananeiza pustulosa; it is interpreted as the early part of SBZ 23. This section also contains Praebullalveolina aff. oligocenica, described from the early Rupelian of Turkey, a… Show more

“…Chamber walls are rounded. Our specimens show a few bifurcations in the exoskeleton of the final chambers, a feature that can be observed in B-forms by Adams ( 1968 ) and is also reported by Ferràndez-Cañadell and Bover-Arnal ( 2017 ).…”

“…Therefore, the overall range of Peneroplis thomasi has to be considered as Rupelian–Burdigalian (SBZ 21-SBZ 25). Austrotrillina asmariensis has been mostly reported from the Rupelian to Aquitanian in Europe and the Middle East (e.g., Adams 1968 ; Accordi et al 1998 ; Gallardo et al 2001 ; Sirel 2003 ; Bassi et al 2007 ; Gedik 2015 ; Serra-Kiel et al 2016 ; Ferràndez-Cañadell and Bover-Arnal 2017 ). The only occurrence of this species from the Burdigalian of the Far East (Upper Te, Borneo) is by BouDagher-Fadel et al ( 2000 ).…”

“…Instead, according to our results, the Spiroclypeus beds of the upper part of the Bermoti Member already represent the SBZ 23 Zone. Not only Miogypsinoides complanatus-formosoides is exclusive for this zone but also the Tethys-wide expansion of Spiroclypeus margaritatus westward, that can be traced from SE Spain (Ferràndez-Cañadell & Bover-Arnal, 2017) through SW France (Escornebéou and Abesse), Porto Badisco in S Italy (Benedetti & Briguglio, 2012 and also our still unpublished data), Turkey (Kelereşdere: Özcan et al, 2010a) and Kutch to SE Asia and the Western Pacific, marks the same horizon. The presence of accessorial LBF (Nummulites kecskemetii and Nephrolepidina ex.…”

“…Rare nummulitids with secondary chamberlets, Heterostegina assilinoides , were recorded in sample Taj–3. Similar to that of Kutch, Western India (Less et al, 2018), an important feature of the LBF fauna is the absence of Operculina complanata , which is widespread in the co-eval assemblages of the Western Tethys from Spain to Eastern Turkey (Less, 1991; Cahuzac and Poignant, 1997; Özcan and Less, 2009, 2010a; Ferràndez-Cañadell and Bover-Arnal, 2017; Less et al, 2018; Parente and Less, 2019).…”
