In this paper we consider the use of lockers in parcel delivery, a recent method used in the last mile logistics. Lockers are pick up points made of several cells that are located in several points of a city where customers can collect their parcels as an alternative to home delivery. We study routing problems in which one or multiple vehicles are used to deliver parcels directly to customers or to lockers. We also study the influence of the introduction of lockers when these problems include time windows. We propose a set of novel formulations for these problems, some valid inequalities, and a branch-and-cut algorithm. Moreover, we investigate the difference between the routing problems with lockers and the classical routing problems.

The demand for delivering goods to individuals has increased due to several factors such as urbanization, the growth of e-commerce, and the popularization of the internet. There are several challenges to deal and in the face of this, there is a constant search for new alternatives. In this scenario, among other solutions, lockers emerged, which are cabinets equipped with a self-collection interface, strategically positioned to serve customers asynchronously. In this work, we approach different formulations of the last mile delivery problem with lockers, considering the size of parcels and compartments and the probabilistic characteristic of the problem due to uncertainty about users accepting to use the locker. In all formulations, the objective is to decide the location of lockers and vehicle routes in order to minimize the cost of last-mile delivery. For this, we propose heuristics and mathematical models to deal with different problems, we create instances based on real data, and we perform several computational tests. We evaluated different scenarios and estimate how much the use of lockers can generate savings. In the probabilistic problem, we were able to simulate different scenarios, where all users accept or reject the use of lockers. Doing this, we were able to measure the savings that the use of lockers can generate and, thus, make decisions about the investment to be made in the construction and promotion of the use of lockers. In this article, we define a new routing problem that arises in the last‐mile delivery of parcels, in which customers can be served either directly at home by a capacitated truck, or possibly with a drone carried on the truck, or in a self‐service mode using one of the available lockers. We investigate four different formulations, and for one of them, we propose a branch‐and‐cut approach. We also discuss some possible variants of the original problem. In the computational experiments, we analyze and compare the performance of the four formulations for the problem and its variants, and we provide some useful managerial insights.
