Lasers: The Next Bit

Abstract: Since the early twentieth century rotary drilling has revolutionized the procedure of extraction of crude oil replacing conventional methods like cable tool drilling. However with the advent of new technology it is time to look at future alternative, more efficient drilling methods. This paper acts as an eye opener to the feasibility of using laser drilling over modern currently used drilling techniques. The design and operation of a new laser-mechanical bit is put forth by … Show more

“…Current laser systems are of low energy conversion rate and high cost, and susceptible to interference from construction environment (moisture, dust, high temperature etc.). Therefore, laser-assisted rock breaking technology, although possessing the advantages of high efficiency and wide application range, is still in the stage of experiment and theoretical exploration [22].…”

“…The efficiency of a laser cutter depends on several laser properties including discharge type, peak power, wavelength, average power, intensity, repetition rate, and pulse with the discharge type [25][26][27]. The laser discharge can be pulsed or continuous.…”

“…As we used laser CO 2 for this experiments in this paper, then we just mention whole information about carbon dioxide laser [25]. The operating wavelength of laser is 10.6 , and can be operated under three different operation modes: continuous wave (CW), normal pulse (NP), and super-pulsed pulse (SPP).…”

“…Reliable super-pulsed operation is achieved if the 4 times enhancement is at 25% pulse duty cycle, for example, for 100 µs on time, the minimum off time is 300 µs [25]. The parameters subjected for super-pulse are inherently limited by the radiofrequency (RF) excitation tube and gas discharge characteristics.…”
