Laser welding of austenitic ferrofluid container for the KRAKsat satellite

Abstract: The production of a ferrofluid container, intended for use in the KRAKsat (CubeSat type) satellite in space conditions, is presented. Mechanized laser beam welding for AISI 316L stainless steel test joint and container prototype was developed and tested. The welded test joints were examined by non-destructive visual, penetration and radiographic testing and destructive testing by macro- and microscopic examination, static tensile test, static bending test, and hardness measurements. The welded container protot… Show more

“…If the gap is too large, a "false friend" may result due to a lack of fusion of the upper and lower sheets [15]. Investigations into gas-tight laser beam welding are known in the fields of aerospace [16] and battery technology [17]. For example, a hermetic seal is required for lithium-ion cell casings and they are laser-welded with uncoated materials such as aluminum and stainless steel [17].…”

“…Performing a hybrid modification consisting of coating deposition followed by laser modification makes it possible to improve material properties [11]. The validity of the laser as a heat source is related to its widespread use for welding and surface modification [12]. The use of a laser beam for modification is advantageous due to the reproducibility of the process and the possibility of precise determination of the modification area [13].…”
