Laser ultrasonic visualization technique using a fiber-optic Bragg grating ultrasonic sensor with an improved adhesion configuration

Abstract: In this research, we attempt to establish a reliable structural health monitoring technique for composite materials by combining phase-shifted fiber-optic Bragg grating sensing with the laser ultrasonic visualization technology. In the first part of this article, a novel cross-adhesion configuration is designed to resolve the directionality problem of the phase-shifted fiber-optic Bragg grating ultrasonic sensing. In the adhesion configuration, Lamb waves are guided by an orthogonally bonded optical f… Show more

“…Fiber gratings have been the most popular approach for ultrasonic detection. Yu et al proposed a fiber-optic phase-shift grating sensor for the detection of laser ultrasound in composite materials 12 . Although the phase-shift section helped to decrease the effective interaction length, the range of response frequency was limited to be several megahertz.…”

“…Nevertheless, the assembled multilayer structure may bring sensor instability and fabrication inconsistency. These film sensors exhibit obvious advantages over the grating ones, such as higher sensitivity and broader frequency, especially for the application of laser ultrasonic detection 12 . Therefore, it is much necessary to develop a new type of film sensors for the acquisition of weak echoes in composite materials.…”

“…This amplification enhances the sensitivity of the FBG sensors to GW. The edge filtering approach was later used for SHM by several researchers [8][9][10][11]. The directionality was incorporated in the SHM algorithm by Soman et al [12].…”
