Laser treatment improves quality of life of hirsute females

Abstract: Hirsutism has a significant impact on the quality of life of affected patients. We report a prospective study of 45 hirsute females attending a laser clinic. Of these, 15 patients completed a pair of modified dermatology life quality index (DLQI) questionnaires, immediately before and at varying intervals (up to 6 months) after laser treatment. The mean DLQI score before treatment was 12.8 (median = 9.0, SD = 8.5). The mean DLQI score at 1-2 months was 7.0 (median = 2.5, SD = 10.0, P = 0.06), at 2-4 months it … Show more

“…In the present study, women with major levels of hair growth (F-G ≥15) scored significantly higher both on item and dimension levels compared to women with minor (F-G ≤14) levels of hair growth. The mean value for DLQI was high (DLQI = 11.8) which is similar to what has been found in previous studies evaluating quality of life in women with hirsutism [14,29,30] and in parity with other severe forms of skin diseases, for example psoriasis, or atopic dermatitis [19,31,32]. Jayaprakasam et al [30] on the other hand found only one skin disease that had a worse DLQI score than hirsutism, when comparing QoL in dermatological outpatients with 25 different skin diseases.…”

“…There are studies demonstrating a positive effect on quality of life after laser treatment [14,29]; however, the effect was temporary and the DLQI increased with returning facial hair [14]. …”

“…Hirsute women have been found to experience a greater degree of psychiatric disturbance compared to the general population [12] and higher levels of anxiety [13] together with psychotic symptoms and interpersonal fears in relation to nonhirsute controls [14]. A compromised quality of life has also been reported comparable to that experienced by patients with skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis [15,16]. Qualitative research has found that women with hirsutism and polycystic ovary syndrome report feeling babnormal,Q bunfeminine,Q and bfreakishQ [17,18].…”

“…Mean DLQI of our study was 6.67±4.57 which was lesser than mean scores of the study by Baig et al and Loo et al where it was 17.9±5.71 and 12.8±8.5 respectively. 4,10 So, on the average patient's life in our study was moderately affected.…”
