Laser spectroscopy of iridium monoboride

Abstract: High resolution laser induced fluorescence spectrum of IrB in the spectral region between 545 and 610 nm has been recorded and analyzed. Reacting laser-ablated iridium atoms with 1% B(2)H(6) seeded in argon produced the IrB molecule. This is the first experimental observation of the IrB molecule. Four vibronic transition bands, (v,0) with v=0-3 of an electronic transition system, have been observed. Spectra of all four isotopic molecules, (191)Ir(10)B, (193)Ir(10)B, (191)Ir(11)B, and (193)Ir(11)B, were recorde… Show more

“…The six bands analyzed by Balfour et al [7], five from vibrational levels of the [19.7] 2 R + state and one from the [22.05] 2 P state, all involved the same lower state, X 2 R + v = 0, with the combination differences, R(N À 1) À P(N + 1), of all six bands in good agreement. Although the lower state of the single band analyzed by Zhen et al [8] was assigned as the same X 2 R + v = 0 state observed by Balfour et al [7], there was a large discrepancy in the lower state combination differences.…”

“…Only five species, IrO [16], IrC [17], IrN [18], IrF [19], and IrB [20] have been reported to date. The current study on IrP represents only the second reported Irmonopnictide to be observed.…”

“…Since these complexes contain active iridium-oxygen moieties it is important to better understand the bonding in the diatomic systems. To date, seven diatomic iridium containing molecules have been studied experimentally: IrO [1][2][3], IrC [4,5], IrN [5], IrP [6,7], IrB [8], IrF [9,10], and IrH/D [11].…”
