Laser processing of micro/nano biomimetic structures

Abstract: Inspired by nature, many researchers have noticed that the micro-and nano-structures originated from organism's surfaces which indict unique properties such as superhydrophobicity, drag reduction, structure colour have much use in academic value. However, conventional processing methods for mimicking biomimetic surface need multistep and is time wasted, not environmental friendly and uneconomic. Thanks to the development of ultrafast laser technology, the pulse duration can reach femtosecond scale, which can p… Show more

“…In [32], increasing the angle of incidence from 0 • to 60 • generated LIPSS with spatial periods in the range of ~214 nm to ~613 nm on 50 µm thick PET foils. The values measured were in accordance with Equation (1). A similar experiment with 50 µm thick PET foils was performed using a xenon chloride (XeCl) excimer laser with a wavelength λ of 308 nm [31].…”

“…Nature makes abundant use of highly versatile nano-and microscale surface features [1][2][3] for antiadhesion [4,5], wetting [6,7], directional liquid transport [8,9], and structural color [10,11]. All these surface properties are strongly influenced by the specific designs of the corresponding structures.…”

“…To further understand the superhydrophobic nature of the rose petal and its PDMS replica, SEM was used to observe the distribution of microgravity and nanovoid on the rose petal and the PDMS replica. According to previous reports, the rose petal surface comprises hierarchical micropapillary arrays and nanofolds on the upper epidermis, while only nanofolds exist on the lower epidermis [17,25,26]. Figure 2B shows the SEM micrograph of dried rose petals.…”

“…Lasers are rapidly being employed in cutting, welding, punching, surface modification, laser micromachining, laser etching, and other processing applications as laser technology advances. [1][2][3] Most traditional semiconductor material processing processes are inefficient and have a low-yield rate owing to variances in various materials and their inherent brittleness. Because of its high accuracy, noncontact nature, and ease of control, laser processing has key applications in wafer cutting, scribing, ablation, and slotting.…”
