Laser Microtextured Surfaces for Friction Reduction: Does the Pattern Matter?

Abstract: Frictional performances of different textures, including axisymmetric and directional patterns, have been tested in the mixed and the hydrodynamic lubrication regimes. Experimental results, corroborated by numerical simulations, show that the leading parameter is the geometrical pattern void ratio since a large number of dimples offers, at low speed, a trap for debris whereas, at high speed, due to the flow expansion in each micro-hole, fosters a fluid pressure drop, the consequent insurgence of micro-cavitati… Show more

“…Because the honing angle and the spacing between honing grooves are functionally important parameters [100][101][102], a comprehensive description of the spatial properties of the crosshatched structures is needed. Classical spatial parameters do not also describe the pattern of textured surfaces [103], although a method of their description was developed [104]. Horizontal parameters were applied for the characterisation of the surface profile.…”

“…r Direct laser writing (DLW) is applied when the texture is of 10's to 100's of micrometers in the scale. The most popular texture is dimples -craters ablated by single or multiple laser pulses used for lubrication and friction reduction [111], [112].…”

“…Because of the unique pattern-dependent properties of the texture, improper design of surface texture will result in adverse effects on the tribological performance (Ibatan et al, 2015;Gropper et al, 2016;Wang and Wang, 2015). Then so far, surface texture parameters optimization has still remained one of research hotspots and some researchers have made contributions to this area (Putignano et al, 2020;Zhang et al, 2018;Wang et al, 2020;Rahmani and Rahnejat, 2018).…”
