The current study investigates the behavior of the grooving process of stainless steel X10CrNiTi18-9 that produced by CO 2 laser turning process. The response surface methodology is adopted to explore this behavior, and conclude the effect of the laser control working conditions on the different quality aspects of the machined groove. The input variables of the study include Laser power (LP), assistance gas (oxygen) pressure (AGP), feed rate (FR) and motor rotating speed (RS). While the metal removal rate (MRR), depth of cut (DC), upper cut width (UC), lower cut width (LC) and root roundness error (RE), are considered as the responses. Using ANOVA analysis, the critical parameters and the associated levels are identified for the optimal combination. The results are modeled and illustrated to closely understand the effect and surface quality of CO 2 -Laser turning process. Results indicate that, MRR, DC, and UC increase with increasing LP and AGP, but they decrease with the increase of FR and RS. There is an interaction effect between (LP and FR) and (LP and RS) on each of LC and RE. The optimal combination of machining conditions reached at LP=3000 watt, AGP=0.6 bar, FR= 200 mm/min, RS= 30 rpm. which maximize MRR (0.5095 g/min), DC (0.6870 mm), UC (0.7028), LC (0.3057) and minimize RE to 16.3230 µm. The optimal conditions were validated laboratory. A small deviate between the optimum experimental results and the predicted values were noticed for MRR (1.8%), DC (2.3%), UC (7.3%), LC (9.2%), and RE (3.2%).

Titanium (Ti) and its alloys have received signi cant attention in recent years, particularly for applications in the medical science, automobile, and aerospace sectors. Drilling is used for around 40 percent to 60 percent of an aeronautical product's material removal processes. Non-conventional machining can be considered to obtain an optimal quality of drilled holes. The present study has employed a pulsed Nd:YAG laser having 250 W average power to perform the micro-drilling on titanium alloy of 0.45 mm thick sheet. The study focuses on determining the impact of laser parameters (gas pressure (4 ~ 8 bar), laser input current (200 ~ 260 A), pulse width (4 ~ 8 ms), and pulse repetition rate (1 ~ 7 Hz)) on performance characteristics during micro drilling on a thin foil of titanium alloy having 0.45 mm thickness. To evaluate the quality of micro-drilled holes, aspects, e.g., circularity, spatter area, and taper, have been considered. The response surface methodology based on the design of experiment technique was employed to estimate the in uence of parameters on performance characteristics with the least number of experiments. The study indicates that assistant gas pressure, pulse width, and laser input current are the essential parameters in taper formation and spatter deposition. The study suggests that the increase in pulse repetition rate and pulse width improves the circularity of the hole. The electron micrography of the drilled holes helps to determine the development of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) and micro-crack near drilled holes. The presented research provides a new understanding of how the process parameters contribute to HAZ development, crack occurrence and intensity.

Recent developments in manufacturing require holes on composite materials, especially on the carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) with smooth hole periphery, low delamination, burr formation, taper, better circularity, and a high processing speed. Its non-conductive surface (epoxy layering) limits its machining through electrical discharge machining (EDM). To overcome this limitation, an aluminum fixture has been designed to guide the copper electrode of EDM for producing holes on a CFRP sheet of 1 mm thickness at low machining complexity, cost, time, delamination, burr in hole periphery and without affecting the material’s surface quality and performance. Even components with high geometrical complexity can also be drilled through this approach. Here, a multi-quality analysis called grey relational analysis is developed for examining the hole quality attributes, considering peak current, pulse on and off time, and flushing pressure as input parameters. This approach points out the optimum factor level setting and critical parameters (pulse-on time and peak current) that regulate the hole attributes (entrance and exit diameter, circularity, taper, material removal, and tool wear rate). An artificial neural network model has been designed and trained through experimental data sets. This model can also be adopted during the determination of hole quality attributes when the parameter settings are beyond a defined boundary, as the regression analysis value is very close to 1, and model performance is 4.99e-10. Peak current = 4 A, pulse-on time = 25 µs, pulse-off time=25 µs, and flushing pressure = 0.6 MPa were the optimum drilling parameters. In the initial hole, average burr length is 391.75 μm, and delamination of 539.3 μm is noticed. But burr formation is very negligible with delamination of 350.7 μm being observed with uniform circularity (0.979), low taper angle (−0.81354°), and TWR (0.000069 g/min) under optimum drilling conditions through this drilling approach.
