Laser-induced damage threshold based on thermal effects in high-purity silica optical fiber

Abstract: .Laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) is investigated at several wavelengths in the high-purity silica optical fiber. The finite element method (FEM) is used to study transmission mode, LIDT, temperature distribution, and thermal stress distribution of the fiber. Our results show that the center of the front surface is subjected to severe thermal effects under laser irradiation and consequently, and it is susceptible damage. The variations in temperature and thermal stress are identified as increasing with la… Show more

“…33,34 Therefore, regulating, suppressing and even eliminating SDELs are promising ways to effectively improve the LIDTs of fused silica optical elements and resultantly promote the advances of these fields. 46,47 Therefore, this work provides a novel approach to characterize the SDELs on machined fused silica surfaces. On the basis of this, this work provides a convenient method for raising the LIDTs of fused silica optical elements through monitoring, suppressing and even eliminating the SDELs on machined fused silica surfaces.…”

“…36,37,39 Recently, only the laser damage test method could be used to obtain the LIDTs of fused silica optical elements. 46,47 However, it would damage these expensive fused silica optical elements. 46,47 Moreover, the prediction model of the LIDT of the optical surface is also considered as an excellent tool to describe the laser-induced damage initiation process and reveal its internal physical mechanisms.…”
