Laser drilling: reviewing the effect of purging system and formation parameters

Mohamed Hosin ElNeiri,
Abdel Sattar Abdel Hamid Dahab,
Abdulaziz Mohamed Abdulaziz
et al.

Abstract: Laser drilling is capable of reducing drilling costs and time. In laser drilling, a high rate of penetration (ROP) can be achieved, and the hole is cased due to laser interaction once it is drilled. In addition, laser technology can substitute conventional perforation techniques with no formation damage. Rock cutting with a laser beam is affected by various variables that fall within three categories; the rock parameters, purging system and experimental setup, and laser parameters. Each set of these categories… Show more

“…This can reduce the risk of thermal damage to the surrounding material, which is crucial when drilling delicate or heat-sensitive Ni 50 Ti 48 V 2 SMA. Higher laser power typically increases MRR because extra energy is delivered to the SMA, leading to faster heating and material removal [34]. As laser power increases, there is a higher risk of thermal damage to the material.…”

“…Metal melted and gathered at the hole entrance, and much spatter solidified around the hole due to the high stream of nitrogen gas pressure. Moreover, high laser power significantly affects the drilled hole, resulting in the spattering of SMA materials and irregular circular shapes on both the entry and exit sides [34]. Figure 6(b) displays sectioned laser-drilled holes with high machining parameters, indicating more taper.…”
