Laser assisted uvulopalatoplasty: six and eighteen month results

Abstract: Our ongoing evaluation of the results of laser assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) for snoring is presented. Follow-up between 18 and 24 months post-treatment completion, of patients with a successful result at six months, reveals that 22 per cent of these patients suffer failure of snoring control between these two evaluation points. This equates to an overall success rate at this time of 55 percent.LAUP, like other surgical remedies for snoring, has a continued relapse rate. This must be considered when counse… Show more

“…In one study, subsequent to a follow‐up of between 18 and 24 months after LAUP, it was found that 55% of the partners were happy with the results of operation. This had declined from 71% at 6 months 18 . In another series of 20 patients evaluated after more than 5 years, 18 had total or near‐total resolution of their snoring but still had occasional loud breathing during sleep.…”

“…4 Postoperative pain appears to be a major factor in patient satisfaction after UPPP or LAUP in that only 70% to 75% of the patients stated that in retrospect they would have the procedure again. 3,4 Postoperative pain also influences the initial treatment success of LAUP because some patients refuse additional treatments because of pain intolerance. Cheng et al 11 reported that only 15.6% of their patients underwent more than 1 treatment session partly because of severe postoperative pain and sore throat.…”

“…[10][11][12] In the longer term however, results are less favourable. [13][14][15] Both procedures have the signi cant associated side-effects of post-operative pain and odynophagia, with the potential for various complications including haemorrhage, infection, nasal re ux/regurgitation and altered gustation. 16,17 The search for simple, effective, inexpensive and well-tolerated surgical treatment in snoring is therefore on.…”
