The physical nature of cave walls and its impact on Upper Palaeolithic image making and viewing has frequently been invoked in explanations about the function of cave art. The morphological features (convexities, concavities, cracks and ridges) are frequently incorporated into the representations of prey animals that dominate the art, and several studies have attempted to document the relationship between the cave wall and the art in a quantitative manner. One of the effects of such incorporation is that undulating walls will distort the appearance of images as viewers change their viewing position. Was this distortion deliberate or accidental? Until now, the phenomenon has not been investigated quantitatively. We address this here, analysing 54 Late Upper Palaeolithic animal images deriving from three Cantabrian caves, Covalanas, El Pendo and El Castillo. We introduce a novel use for photogrammetry and 3D modelling through documenting the morphology of these caves’ walls and establishing the specific relationship between the walls and the art created on them. Our observations suggest that Palaeolithic artists deliberately placed images on very specific topographies. The restricted nature of these choice decisions and the fact that the resulting distortions could have been avoided but were not suggest that the interaction between viewer, art and wall was integral to the way cave art functioned.

Convenciones gráficas en el arte parietal del Paleolítico cantábrico: la perspectiva de las figuras zoomorfasGraphic conventions in Cantabrian Paleolithic Rock Art: The perspective of zoomorphic fi gures Aitor Ruiz Redondo (*) RESUMEN La cuestión de la perspectiva mostrada por las representaciones animales paleolíticas ha interesado a los investigadores desde principios del siglo XX. Tradicionalmente ha servido para argumentar un fenómeno de evolución lineal hacia la consecución de la maestría en la representación gráfi ca. En las últimas décadas, este modelo evolucionista ha entrado en crisis, poniendo en duda lo anteriormente conocido en materia de perspectiva. Para afrontar esta cuestión, hemos analizado de forma cuantitativa, positiva e individualizada algunas características de las fi guras zoomorfas de 11 conjuntos gráfi cos parietales. Los resultados obtenidos abogan por la existencia de distintos grupos de conjuntos rupestres paleolí-ticos en el ámbito cantábrico. Además, proponemos que las diferencias entre los comportamientos gráfi cos de estos grupos están directamente relacionados con la existencia de un marco cronológico distinto para cada uno de ellos. MARÍA CRUZ BERROCAL (*) JAVIER GOYTRE SAMANIEGO (**) JUAN GASPAR LEAL VALLADARES (*) MYRIAM LÓPEZ DOMÍNGUEZ (***) RESUMEN Presentamos un análisis historiográfico de la investigación del arte levantino desde su comienzo hasta nuestros días, a través de un estudio bibliométrico basado en una muestra de 521 registros (notas, comunicaciones en congresos, artículos, capítulos de libros y monografías) y 235 autores, que consideramos suficientemente representativa. Hemos definido tres períodos (1907-1960, 1960-1980, 1980-1995) a partir de la producción, la temática y las características de autor. Hacemos hincapié en la institucionalización de la arqueología española, el personalismo y el actual localismo de la investigación.La primera etapa destaca por la gran actividad de eruditos locales, mientras que en la segunda el número de autores se reduce, monopolizando éstos gran parte de la investigación. Desaparece casi totalmente la aportación extranjera, mientras aparece la mujer investigadora. La tercera etapa es el momento de máxima expansión de la investigación y descentralización del estudio del arte levantino. Predominan los autores independientes o adscritos a las administraciones autonómicas, fuera de los circuitos aca-(*) Departamento de Prehistoria, CEH, CSIC.
