“…The radiographic and clinical features of a nonossifying fibroma usually allow for an easy diagnosis, but if necessary, the histologic features of spindle stromal cells, fibrosis, and aggregates of foamy macrophages will allow for separation from GCTs. A foreign body giant cell reaction will contain giant cells but not a mononuclear cell stroma (36,37).…”

“…The possibility of the carcinogenesis of this material ap pears to have been almost completely ruled out by both clinical, histological, and experimental research (Kirchner et al, 1966;Stone and Arnold, 1967;Boedts et al, 1967;Harris and Hawk, 1969). However, migration of the injected material can occur, though rarely, into the cricothyroid membrane, thyroid gland or subcutaneous neck region (Stephens et al, 1976). Hurst (1972) injected Teflon percutaneously through the thyroid ala cartilage into the vocal cord.…”

“…Most patients receive their PTFE implants late in life and several reports have shown the progression of histological change in these patients (Lewy, 1966;Boedts et al, 1967;Harris and Hawk, 1969;Goff, 1973;Rubin, 1975;Stephens et al, 1976;Sanfilippo et al, 1980), but there have been few studies of the tissue reaction after a significant number of years (Dedo and Carloo, 1982;Wenig et al, 1990). Arnold and Stephens (1980) found no malignancy in patients with up to 10 years' follow-up after vocal cord injection; Politano (1990) has not recorded malignancy in 15,000 patients treated for incontinence with Polytef injections since 1964 and there are no other reports of malignancy following the use of the solid forms of PTFE in humans.…”
