Laryngoscope Illuminance in a Tertiary Children’s Hospital

Abstract: At our facility, approximately one-third of incandescent laryngoscopes exhibited substandard light output. On the basis of these findings, our hospital has converted all of its incandescent laryngoscopes to light-emitting diode (LED) devices. Such changes, as well as the institution of a quality-control program including scheduled laryngoscope inspection and battery and bulb replacement for incandescent laryngoscopes, may reduce adverse events associated with poor-quality direct laryngoscopy.

“…11 Briefly, 3 serial measurements were taken for each device at 10-second intervals and averaged to give a final illuminance value for that device. For AC-powered xenon light source laryngoscopes, all source boxes were initially tested using the same light cable, and the unit closest to the group mean was then used for testing all laryngoscopes.…”
