Laryngeal Granular Cell Tumor; Rare Location

Abstract: Granular cell tumors are benign subcutaneous or submucosal lesions of neurogenic origin. In this case study one patient was diagnosed and treated successfully with complete surgical resection of a laryngeal granular cell tumor that was originated from the left arytenoid region that very rare location. There is no evidence of recurrence 2 years after surgery. Granular cell tumors should be considered in the differential diagnosis of laryngeal masses, particularly in the posterior glottis.

“… 5 Grossly, laryngeal GCTs are characterized as being firm, round, mucosa-covered masses located most frequently in the posterior two-thirds of the vocal folds although other sites such as arytenoid, posterior cricoid region, supra- or subglottic areas have also been described. 6 …”

“…Granulomata also mostly result from trauma but macroscopically they are similar to the GCTs in that they are located on the posterior larynx. 3,12 If deep biopsies are not taken, because of squamous proliferation on the surface of the lesion and because they show local invasion of adjacent tissue they can easily be mistaken for well-differentiated carcinoma by an inexperienced pathologist. 4,13 This may thus be mismanaged by radical surgery such as total laryngectomy.…”

“…If this tumor is found in children the differential diagnosis with juvenile laryngeal papilloma should be made. 2 The lesion located on the vocal process of arytenoid came out to be a granular cell tumor after histopathological examination.…”

“…The typical histological appearance of benign granular cell tumor is large epitheloid and spindle-shaped cells with syncitial abundant eosinophilic granular cytoplasm. 2 Complete resection of lesion with an attempt to leave remaining laryngeal structures results in total recovery. 5 Majority of reported tumors were removed by microlaryngoscopy.…”
