Aims: To evaluate the inhibitory effect of five structurally different imidazolium salts on the in vitro growth of plant pathogenic bacteria that belong to divergent taxonomic genera as well as their ability to reduce the severity of common bacterial blight of common bean caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli and bacterial speck of tomato caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato. Methods and Results: Growth inhibition of Xanthomonas, Pseudomonas, Erwinia, Pectobacterium and Dickeya strains by imidazolium salts was assessed in vitro by radial diffusion on agar medium and by ressazurin reduction in liquid medium. The reduction of common bacterial blight and bacterial speck symptoms and the area under de disease progress curves were determined by spraying two selected imidazolium salts on healthy plants 48 h prior to inoculation with virulent strains of the bacterial pathogens. All imidazolium salts inhibited the growth of all plant pathogenic bacteria when tested by radial diffusion on agar medium. The strength of inhibition differed among imidazolium salts when tested on the same bacterial strain and among bacterial strains when tested with the same imidazolium salt. In liquid medium, most imidazolium salts presented the same minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration values (200 µmol l À1 ), the most notable exception of which was the MIC (at least 1000 µmol l À1 ) for the dicationic MImC 10 MImBr 2 . The imidazolium salts C 16 MImBr and C 16 MImCl caused significant reductions in the severity of common bacterial blight symptoms when compared with nontreated plants. Conclusion: Imidazolium salts inhibit the in vitro growth of plant pathogenic bacteria and reduce plant disease symptoms to levels comparable to an authorized commercial antibiotic product. Significance and Impact of the Study: New compounds exhibiting broadspectrum antibacterial activity with potential use in agriculture were identified.

In light of the challenges to control Aedes aegypti and the critical role that it plays as arbovirus vector, it is imperative to adopt strategies that provide fast, efficient and environmentally safe control of the insect population. In the present study, we synthesized six indole derivatives (C1‐C6) and examined their larvicidal activity and persistence against Ae. aegypti larvae, as well as their toxicity towards Raw 264.7 macrophages, Vero cells, Chlorella vulgaris BR017, Scenedesmus obliquus BR003, Caenorhabditis elegans N2 and Galleria mellonella. Among the bioactive compounds (C1, C2, C4 and C5), C2 exerted the strongest larvicidal activity against Ae. aegypti, with LC50 = 1.5 μg/ml (5.88 µM) and LC90 = 2.4 μg/ml (9.50 µM), indicating that the presence of chlorine or bromine groups in the aromatic ring improved the larvicidal activity of the indole derivatives. C1, C2, C4 and C5 did not reduce viability of RAW 264.7 macrophages, Vero cells, C. elegans N2 and G. mellonella. Compounds C1, C2 and C5 did not affect the growth of C. vulgaris BR017 and S. obliquus BR003. Analysis of larvicidal persistence under laboratory conditions revealed that the effect of compounds C1, C2, C4 and C5 lasted for 30 days and caused 100% of larvae mortality within few hours. Altogether, our findings demonstrate that the indole derivatives C1, C2, C4 and C5 effectively control Ae. aegypti larvae population, without clear signs of toxicity to mammalian cells, algae, C. elegans and G. mellonella.

Acanthamoeba is a genus of free‐living amoebae, pervasively found in the environment. Most of its pathogenic species are the causative agent of sight‐threatening Acanthamoeba keratitis and fatal granulomatous amoebic encephalitis. Despite the advancements in the field of chemotherapy, treating Acanthamoeba infections is still challenging due to incomplete knowledge of the complicated pathophysiology. In case of infection, the treatment regimen for the patients is often ineffective due to delayed diagnosis, poor specificity, and side‐effects. Besides the resistance of Acanthamoeba cysts to most of the drugs, the recurrence of infection further complicates the recovery. Thus, it is necessary to develop an effective treatment which can eradicate these rare, but serious infections. Based on various computational and in vitro studies, it has been established that the synthetic scaffolds such as heterocyclic compounds may act as potential drug leads for the development of antiamoebic drugs. In this review, we report different classes of synthetic compounds especially heterocyclic compounds which have shown promising results against Acanthamoeba. Moreover, the antiamoebic activities of synthetic compounds with their possible mode of actions against Acanthamoeba, have been summarized and discussed in this review.
