Larvicidal Activity of Brazilian Plant Essential Oils Against Coenagrionidae Larvae

Abstract: The past 15 years have seen a rise in demand for seafood that has been farmed according to certified organic standards, notably in European countries, led by Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Switzerland. Budding demand is also noticeable among emerging middle classes of transition economies. Part of * Corresponding author: Mark.Prein@giz.de 550this demand is met domestically or regionally. However, a large proportion of organically certified aquaculture products is produced in developing countries wher… Show more

“…Deleterious effects caused by these EOs may be due to some of their constituents or the synergistic combination of several compounds. These EOs have a larvicidal effect against the Coenagrionidae family and fungitoxic activity in vitro against species of pathogenic fungi and wood decay (SILVA et al, 2014;SCHINDLER, 2015). Dillapiole, the major constituent of the EO of P. gaudichaudianum, is present in other species of the genus, and its insecticidal activity has previously been described (VOLPE et al, 2016).…”

“…This species is known by the vernacular name "espanta-pulga" (literally "to keep fleas away") (Von Poser et al, 1996) and is used because of its anti-parasitic properties. The acaricidal, allelopathic, anesthetic and larvicidal activities of its EO have been already reported in the literature (Ribeiro et al, 2010;Silva et al, 2013Silva et al, , 2014Von Poser et al, 1996). Considering the above-described characteristics of the species, the goal of this study was to compare the yield and chemical composition of the EO obtained from fresh leaves of four individuals of H. ringens belonging to a single population in four different seasons (autumn, winter, spring and summer) of a year.…”

“…Epling (Lamiaceae) is a woody herb, 20 to 50 cm high, native to rocky fields of the Pampa biome with a very branched stem (Fracaro and Echeverrigaray, 2006;Von Poser et al, 1996). Some studies have described a high production of essential oil by its leaves, with pulegone as major component (Ribeiro et al, 2010;Silva et al, 2014;Toni et al, 2014;Von Poser et al, 1996). This species is known by the vernacular name "espanta-pulga" (literally "to keep fleas away") (Von Poser et al, 1996) and is used because of its anti-parasitic properties.…”

“…The various biological activities described to essential oil (EO) of N. megapotamica and/ or its components have aroused interest of Latin American researchers working in the area of its occurrence. Among them are noteworthy the antiinflammatory activity described by Apel et al (2006) for EO obtained from specimens in Cananéia, SP, the anesthetic action on fat snook (Centropomus parallelus) obtained with EO of specimens occurring in Santa Maria, RS (Tondolo et al 2013), the inhibition of hemolytic activity of jararaca (Bothrops diporus) venom with EO obtained from plant material collected in Corrientes, Argentina (Torres et al 2014), and the insecticidal activity against larvae of Coenagrionidae (Silva et al 2014). All the described effects are directly influenced by the chemical composition of EO, and knowledge about the income of this extractive is fundamental to the planning and execution of further studies aiming practical applications.…”
