The presence of a Palinuridae phyllosoma larvae near Salado Bay (27º'S) north-central coast of Chile, is reported. The identification is discussed and the possibility of this larvae being Projasus bahamondei, which is the only species from the family that is described for the area, is discarded. The shape, size and position of the cephalic, pereionic, abdominal and telson appendices concords with descriptions of advanced stage Jasus frontalis larvae. Moreover, the specimen described here has five pairs of biramous pereiopods with setose exopods. In accordance with these observations and published data, it is proposed that this phyllosoma corresponds to a stage XII or XIII of J. frontalis larva.

While early phyllosomas (instar I) of the Mediterranean species can be determined by the identification key of Pessani and Mura [12], and later instars might possibly be screened following Rivera and Mujica [13] and Pessani and Mura [12], nistos and juveniles, only very rarely caught [14], could be classified on the basis of similarities between juveniles and adults [15]; moreover, generally nistos present setolose pleopods, while pleopods of early juveniles are shovel-shaped [16]. This paper reports some rare findings of larval and early post-larval individuals of the family Scyllaridae in the waters around Sicily, describes the main features of the specimens, and attempts their taxonomic attribution.…”

Abstract:The rare findings of specimens in larval or post-larval stages (6 phyllosomas and 7 nistos/early juveniles) belonging to the family Scyllaridae are reported for the waters around Sicily. Some were stranded on different winter occasions near the Strait of Messina (north-eastern Sicily), while others were collected during experimental trawl surveys carried out in the Sicilian Channel, at depths up to 450 m. All phyllosoma instars were in advanced stages of development; however, the absence of complete morphological references on the larval characteristics of the family Scyllaridae, necessary for distinguishing the different genera (Scyllarus and Scyllarides, small or large slipper lobsters, or the extremely rare Acantharctus) and species inhabiting the Mediterranean, did not allow to attribute the phyllosomas to a specific taxon. On the contrary, apart from one nisto without apparent lobes (maybe belonging to the species Scyllarides latus), nistos/early juveniles could be classified at generic level on the basis of similarities with the morphology of adult antennae, as pertaining to the genus Scyllarus, but the characters of juveniles are in general ineffective to discriminate between Scyllarus arctus and Scyllarus pygmaeus (the only two known Central Mediterranean species); in fact, the small size and the depth at which they settled suggested that some may belong to the smaller, deeper species Scyllarus pygmaeus.

1. Identifying the diverse assemblage of species inhabiting rocky and coral reef habitats in isolated oceanic environments, and the important sound cues emitted from the reef, are crucial components to understand how species locate suitable habitats for the completion of their life-cycle and, thus, the functioning of these vulnerable ecosystems. 2. Recent field information suggests that the majority of reef biodiversity comprises small cryptic invertebrates; however, knowledge on these small components is extremely scarce. 3. The present study used light attraction methods to explore the diversity of larval, post-larval and macrobenthic cryptic fauna, and hydrophones to characterize the natural soundscape of rocky and coral reef habitats at the Robinson Crusoe island (Juan Fernandez Archipelago; 33 38 0 S, 78 50 0 W), and Rapa Nui (Easter Island; 27 7 0 S, 109 21 0 W), respectively. 4. Pelagic collections found important site-specific patterns and identified two main species assemblages: early-life stages (e.g. eggs, larval and juvenile stages of crustaceans, molluscs, and fishes) and emerging macrobenthos (e.g. demersal zooplankton such as peracarid crustaceans, ostracods, copepods, and polychaetes), with the latter contributing between 73 and 98% to the total catches. 5. The soundscape records showed marked differences among sites and seasons at Robinson Crusoe island, with variable differences found between day and night. However, at Rapa Nui, there were no differences between sites, but the ambient sound was higher at night possibly due to higher snapping shrimp activity. 6. This information highlights the importance of considering small-scale (site-to-site) patterns when evaluating overlooked components of diversity (i.e. biological or acoustic) in oceanic habitats, and provides the basis for understanding the importance of natural noise in the settlement of most reef-associated species, crucial features for the conservation of these remote and vulnerable ecosystems.
