Larval pupation site preference on fruit in different species of Drosophila

Abstract: Larval pupation site preference (PSP) of different species of Drosophila was analyzed on fruit in the laboratory. The larvae of D. melanogaster, D. ananassae, D. virilis, D. novamexicana and D. hydei pupated on the surface of glass vials; D. simulans, D. yakuba, D. mauritiana and D. malerkotliana pupated in/on fruit; and D. rajasekari pupated on cotton plugs in all experiments. D. bipectinata larvae changed their preference from fruit in the control to glass surface for all of the fruits tested. The statistica… Show more

“…We used a Mann-Whitney U test (Sokal and Rohlf 1995) to compare the mean distance between nearest neighbor D. simulans-D. simulans, and D. buzzatii-D. buzzatii pupae versus mean distance between D. simulans-D. buzzatii and D. buzzatii-D. simulans pupae. We also examined homogeneity for replicates within larval responses to odors of other larvae, and larval reactions to acidity/alkalinity using a variance analysis between replicates within a recording time.…”

“…Thus, D. melanogaster larvae prefer to pupate outside the breeding site, while D. simulans pupate on the fruit (Vandal et al 2008). How Drosophila larvae select pupation sites in the wild is poorly understood (Medina-Muñoz and Godoy-Herrera 2004).…”

“…Studies of D. mauritiana pupariation site preference indicate that this species prefers to pupariate in fruit (Vandal et al. ), and the similarity in phenotype between D. simulans populations from southeast Africa, D. sechellia , and D. mauritiana suggests that pupariation on fruit is an ancestral trait for the D. simulans clade. Selection of sites off‐fruit could have emerged in cosmopolitan populations as D. simulans emigrated from southeast Africa.…”

“…Entry into “wandering” behavior in D. melanogaster is normally associated with complete larval exit from the food and movement up the sides of culture vials in search of a moderately dry pupation site. Many closely related Drosophila species choose to simply move to the food surface where they pupate(Vandal and Shivanna, 2007). In these species, the change in body position from the vertical head-down foraging position to the food surface appears to be the key behavioral transition necessary for survival through metamorphosis.…”
