Larval habitat preferences of a threatened butterfly species in heavy-metal grasslands

Abstract: content a loss of habitats of A. niobe and associated species of conservation concern may occur without management. On those sites sheep grazing seems to be an appropriate way to keep the habitats open and rich in violets.

“…A. adippe occurred more closely to woodland edges, agreeing with its affinity for open forests and edges (Ellis et al, 2019; Fartmann et al, 2013; Reinhardt et al, 2020; Warren, 1995). A. niobe occurred in more open conditions, in agreement with earlier studies (Salz & Fartmann, 2009, 2017; Stevens et al, 2010).…”

“…In the Carpathians, this combination of resources persists owing to the traditional small‐scale land use. Elsewhere in Central Europe, habitats of A. niobe depend on specific disturbance regimes, or the geophysical properties of the substrate (Reinhardt et al, 2020; Salz & Fartmann, 2009, 2017; Sang et al, 2010). Patches suitable for A. niobe development have probably always been sparsely scattered, more frequently so in mountains.…”
