“…Two species of rare tiger beetles, puritan tiger beetle ( Cicindela puritana ) and cobblestone tiger beetle ( Cicindela marginipennis ), are found in these shoreline habitats along the Connecticut River and some tributaries. Increased short‐term flow fluctuations downstream of hydropower dams in the Connecticut River basin have contributed to the loss of stable cobble and sand beaches, habitat for larvae and foraging adult tiger beetles (US Fish and Wildlife Service, 1993; Leonard and Bell, 1999; Omland, 2002; New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, 2005). Rivers with extreme ranges of subdaily flow fluctuations may be fishless and have low‐diversity macroinvertebrate assemblages that are dominated by taxa resilient to disturbance, as seen in many glacial‐fed streams (Ward, 1994; Brown et al ., 2006).…”

“…Abbotts Lagoon, where both species occur in fairly equal abundances, with medium‐coarse sand is the anomaly, suggesting that other habitat criteria, such as the consistently moist sand around the Lagoon, are important for C. hirticollis . A study along the Connecticut River found that the rare tiger beetle C. purtiana preferred fine‐medium sands and that sand texture (grain size) was most important in determining larval habitat (Omland, 2002). In addition, surface‐sand texture was more important than that 30 cm below.…”

“…Wire frames simulate shade from sparse beach vegetation. Larval burrows were often found near sparse, low‐lying vegetation, but never under the dominant and invasive European Dune Grass Ammophila arenaria (Omland, 2002; Brust et al , 2006; T. M. Cornelisse, pers. obs.).…”
