Larvae and adults ofHysterothylacium aduncum(Rudolphi, 1802) (Nematoda: Anisakidae) in fishes and crustaceans in the South West Atlantic

Abstract: Sum m ary :Hysterothylacium aduncum (Rudolphi, 1802) is reported from five fishes and one invertebrate species. Third-stage larvae were found in the crustacean Themisto gaudichaudii and in mesenteries of the fishes Engraulis anchoita and Merluccius hubbsi ; fourth-stage larvae were recovered from the digestive tract of M . hubbsi and Scomber japonicus and adult specimens were obtained from the stomach and intestine of M. hubbsi, S. japonicus, G enypterus blacodes and Genypterus brasiliensis. Nematodes are desc… Show more

“…The principal meristic features of the larvae found were as follows (in mm): length of body 5.5 -12.5 (mean 8.87), maximum width of body 0.12 -0.29 (mean 0.18), length of oesophagus 0.60 -1.33 (mean 1.00), length of ventricular appendix 0.25 -0.62 (mean 0.43), length of intestinal caecum 0.11 -0.80 (mean 0.39), distance of nerve ring from anterior extremity 0.18 -0.34 (mean 0.26), distance of excretory pore from anterior extremity 0.19 -0.35 (mean 0.26), and length of tail 0.10 -0.18 (mean 0.14). The nematodes' dimensions were consistent with published descriptions of the parasites (Moravec 1994, Navone et al 1998). …”

“…As shown in the literature, H. aduncum retrieved from the fish body cavity are either encysted (e.g., Køie 1993, Moravec 1994, Rakauskas et al 2008, Gayevskaya et al 2010 or non-encysted (e.g., Berland 1961, Navone et al 1998, Rakauskas et al 2008. “…Nevertheless the most common anisakids in fishes from Argentina belong to the genera Anisakis, Hysterothylacium, Contracaecum, Terranova and Pseudoterranova (Navone et al, 1998;Timi et al, 2001). Anisakis, Contracaecum and doterranova were added.…”

“…Species of Hysterothylacium are normally found in the adult stage in the gut of fishes, whereas larvae have been regularly reported in the tissues of a variety of marine and freshwater fishes and invertebrates (including amphipods, chaetognaths, gastropods, squid, crabs, shrimps, and starfish) serving as intermediate hosts (see Marcogliese 1996, Jackson et al 1997a, Balbuena et al 1998, Navone et al 1998, Anderson 2000, Shih and Jeng 2002.…”
