Larger Thyroid Volume and Adequate Iodine Nutrition in Chinese Schoolchildren: Local Normative Reference Values Compared with WHO/IGN

Abstract: Objective. Thyroid volume measured by ultrasound to define goiter needs reliable local thyroid volume reference from iodine-sufficient populations. The aim of this study is to explore the reference interval for normal thyroid volume in schoolchildren aged 8–10 years from Zhejiang Province, China. Methods. A probability-proportionate-to-size sampling method was applied to select a representative sample of 1213 children aged 8–10 years in Zhejiang Province to detect the thyroid volume, salt iodine, and urine iod… Show more

“…Compared with iodine nutrition of other parts of China, the iodine nutrition of Wuhan which located in central of China was relatively adequate. The MUI of Zhejiang Province which located in the eastern coastal area of China was 178ug/L [20].Similar to the results of this study, the MUI of Chongqing, which located in western China was found to be 222.00ug/L [17].The present result indicated that the situation of iodine de ciency in Wuhan have been corrected, and the comprehensive prevention and control measures based on salt iodization for 26 years have achieved remarkable achievements. However, excessive iodine nutrition (≥ 300 µg/L) was observed among 36.70% of the children, especially in Hannan district ,and 14.00% of the children had UIC below requirement(< 100 µg/L).…”

“…Studies have found that both height and weight were correlated with TVOL, and the TVOL can be well predicted by them (19)(20)(21)(22) , especially weight on TVOL (23) . In this study, TVOL increased significantly with the increase of weight and height, and both height and weight were significantly correlated with TVOL in simple linear regression.…”

“…Some factors such as age, sex, parity, smoking status, ethnicity, genetic causes, and geographic region affecting Tvol have been described [9][10][11][12][13]. It is recommended that the areaand population-specific references are needed to evaluate the normative values of Tvol [14].…”
